sypder gear slop ?
Just replacing rear diff axle bearings on a 1980 12 bolt half ton 2 wheel drive, auto. and was wondering if I should change the spyder gears. There is no damage but is somewhat loose when when moving axle back and forth ,is this normal or something else. Everything checks out but wasn,t sure how much play is in a spyder gear setup. Should it be tight forward and backwards ?

Re: sypder gear slop ?
If the shims are there there is still some play back and forth because the clearance gets less or tighter as the gears heat up, not sure on specs though.

Re: sypder gear slop ?
I haven,t taken them out yet, just deciding if I should replace them while I have it apart. I just don,t know how much slop they are supposed to have if any.

Re: sypder gear slop ?
Thing is if it doesn't clunk putting it in gear or feel like a lot of slack on and off gas or gear whine when driving they are prob good, sure there is a spec for it, not sure what the backlash actually is but if it seems to lose to you and bugs you even if it drives nice then change the set of 4 gears for piece of mind.
