drive shaft help
just installed a 350 and Muncie 4spd in a 66 lwb c10 and will need a driveshaft it will need to be 72 inches from rear u joint to the rear trans seal I measured it where the seal runs on the yoke.i can have it shortened does anyone know what vehicle I need to look for?

push in the front yoke until it bottoms and pull it back 3/4". measure centre of frt ujoint to centre of rear ujoint. give them that meausre

There is no such thing as any specific vehicle to get a driveshaft out of and have it fit perfect. If you have the HD driveshaft and carrier bearing in your truck, I would stay with a 2pc driveshaft and just have the front shaft shortened. If you must go with a one piece, look for a driveshaft that is too long and have it shortened to fit your application. The other option is to have a completely new driveshaft built. That will cost a few bucks for one that long.

Interesting to know if they made one piece DS 72" or longer in to many vehicles, maybe newer suburbans and trucks?
I had one made by Denny's driveshafts and I had to step up to a 3.5" DS for a 54" length of which they will not go over 56" length in the 3.5", probably due to not taking chances of hitting critical speed and coming apart. My 2017 GMC Sierra has a really long DS (probably at least 72" long) but it's like 6" wide and aluminum. For a LWB, I might consider keeping 2 piece if you can like captain said. If not I would check to see what length and width would be safe for you. It could be that you don't push to much RPM to hit the critical speed issue and might be OK with it. Taking some guesses here for you though. |

I'd stay with the 2 piece as well. Its fairly inexpensive to shorten a shaft compared to building a new one with a diameter to work with that length.
Its also worth noting that with the stock 2 piece, pinion angle shouldn't be a concern. 1 piece will almost certainly need adjustments at the trans and pinion to get DL angles right.

I just had one made for my 454, 4-speed muncie setup and it cost a little over $200.

well ok it is done. to have the 2 piece disassembled and shortened would be $150.and I would need a new center bearing and some u joints. to shorten a 1piece is $80 but I had to go to a salvage yard and pick one out of a van full for $75 + u joints.
and then there is a new one 3.5 inch with new yokes and u joints ready to install for $250 + tax. so in just over 2 hours I have a new one. had to remove the center support bracket but I think I'm good |
