Cab Transported in Bed of Truck?

This seems like a weird question, but has anyone tried to fit a 67-72 cab in the back of late model silverado? I found a cab that's too good of a deal to pass up, but my uncle has my trailer on the other side of Missouri.

I'll probably end up renting a uhaul trailer for the day, but I took some measurements on my 67 cab and the bed of my 07 short bed GMC, and it looks like it could fit.

Is this possible, has anyone done this before, or am I just crazy?

I wish i could comment about the late model pickup. I can tell you my 69 cab will not fit in the 69 bed. Bruce

Re: Cab Transported in Bed of Truck?

If the bed was wide enough....I've seen pics of it being done.

The trailer would have to be more convenient though, as far as getting the cab loaded and unloaded. Bring along plenty of wood blocking and even cushions, tie down straps, rope, etc. I'd try and get a spare tire for the trailer also. Renting a trailer is cheaper than missing out on a good cab.

Take some 2x6's and straps. And a cordless circular saw. Let it ride the rails if necessary. Make your bed a flat bed. Just use cloth under the boards so it won't mess up your paint. The late silverado's are about 63" at the tail, and the '67-'72's are about 65".

Re: Cab Transported in Bed of Truck?

Ive carried cabs in the backs of our trucks (67-72) many times. I have no idea on the sizes of later model truck beds though.

Re: Cab Transported in Bed of Truck?

For clarification- I bought a 69 K10 from Sunsoaked69 in Yuma ,AZ. I hauled the project (no eng, trans, t-case) back to Western IA on a car trailer. Once i was home i disassembled the truck and to conserve space thought i would put the cab sideways in the box. No go! As others have mentioned if you block it up above the tubs, it will fit fine. But certainly will not set on the bed floor.

Your late model has notches just above the fender wells for 2x6's. lay 2x6's across those and lay a piece of plywood on top. Turn the cab sideways in the bed.

I keep 4 2x6's and a piece of plywood in my truck all the time.

This sounds like a good mod to do to our trucks. Ill have to see if I can find a picture to see what you are talking about

Re: Cab Transported in Bed of Truck?

Works great. I took my long bed with camper shell to Memphis a while back and picked up a bunch of body sheetmetal.

I put some of the pieces on the bottom below the plywood shelf and the rest on top of it.

Wow guys, thanks for all the tips! I never paid attention to those notches in the bed before. I'll post pictures of it all loaded up this weekend.

Re: Cab Transported in Bed of Truck?

The 73-87s actually had notches for 2x6s. I wasnt even talking about that. If necessary, run 2x6s across the rails(top of the bed). There is nothing under 8 feet wide that you cant carry if you use your head(and straps)

I hauled one back from Carlisle, PA in the bed of a 2000 F250 with no problems. Used lots of straps and paid ridiculous amount for tolls on the turnpike.

Re: Cab Transported in Bed of Truck?

People do it, but I never would consider it. Just not worth the risk of ruining a bed , the cab, or both. That's awful high up there to be lifting a cab compared to the ease of trailer loading. I'd consider the cost of rental to be a minor insurance cost. Risk of damage comes at loading, transporting, and unloading.

Re: Cab Transported in Bed of Truck?

I have done it, but not in a late model yr truck, but I would think the measurements would be very similar. I turned the cab side-ways and the transmission hump fit over the wheel well in the bed. You may need to support the cab with a pallet or tires, and tie it down well so it doesn't move and drive easy. The tough part is being able to lift it high enough to get in & out.

Re: Cab Transported in Bed of Truck?

Well this is a pretty cool feature. I wonder if you could do something like this to a 67-72 bed. Ill have to measure the height of the wheel well.

Re: Cab Transported in Bed of Truck?

With two 2x6 across the bed and plywood on top it's pretty easy to slide a cab into the bed. I also put a support under each 2x6, and should have put one at the end of the plywood. Thanks to everyone's comments I was able to get the most solid $250 cab I've ever seen, and it came with really clean doors that I have stuffed in the back seat of my truck.
