Stock 350 casting question - 010 vs 014 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I've got 2 stock 350 engines that were cast 5 days apart at the same engine plant, but they have different casting numbers. Wondering what the difference was. Here the info:

1) - 1972 GMC 1/2 ton. Suffix V0425TDJ. Casting 3970014
2) - 1972 Chevy 1/2 ton. Suffix V0420TDJ. Casting 3970010

In my experience, all 014 blocks I've had were 2 bolts and had staggered 2 bolt starter pattern, and I have 010's that were 2 and 4 bolt, and had straight across or staggered starter patterns.

I had a 014 block that I built to replace an engine in my Camaro years ago, and my straight pattern mini starter wouldn't work with it.

I'll let you look up the casting numbers but they are both essentially the same block with the 010 casting running from 69 - 79 and the 014 ran only from 70 - 73

I've already got the 014 engine torn down and it's a 4 bolt main with staggered starter holes.

They came with 2-bolt mains as well. It depended on the application, 3/4 ton van and truck almost always got the 4-bolt while the 1/2 ton applications usually did not. Some of those 041 blocks were used in the Z28's and Corvettes as well...The same can be said for the 010 as well, they came in both 2 and 4 bolt versions picking up where the 041's stopped in 73.

010 blocks were used in '68 for sure. It is the casting used for the '68 Camaro SS350 and the Z/28 302. Mine is a large journal 327 from a '68 C/20. I always believed the 010 to be the first large journal small block casting.

The suffix code doesn't show the cast date of the blocks, it shows the date they where installed in the truck.
Either one or both could of sat waiting to be used for 6 months or more.

Oddly enough, blocks were cast 5 days apart - D 14 72 and D 19 72. Just wondering if one being a GMC had anything to do with it.

A machine shop guy told me the 010 blocks were really good because they had a higher nickel level in the casting which made them stronger.
