big lathe & BIG METAL ROLLER
been looking for a nice lathe -missed several -i tend to have to think on every thing i buy ?? but found a 18x60 " grizzly lathe with the 3 1/8 spindle bore hole -made in 2006-fellow died & family had it for sale . seems like it sat for several yrs w/ no use ,it did come w a 3 & 4 jaw chuck, taper attachment, i would like to find a steady & follow rest, and the correct manuals , anybody know of a model like mine ?even if i could find one -i could make a copy of there steady & follow rests ?? i tried grizzly -no luck ? i guess the lathe bulider of "jet lathes " made this ,and grizzly sold several ! anyway i will post some pics later thanks

Re: big lathe
Damn that is a nice large lathe..... I just picked up a 1944 Logan 820 10" lathe. I spent 15-20 hours cleaning her up and now she works like new!!!
Before I cleaned it up.

Re: big lathe
i got most of the "knobs & levers " figured out ! done several jobs on it -i really like it ! everything is so tight & smooth ! all my previous lathes were worn out ,you had to sneak on a size or polish it to size ,the big spindle is a very good item to have ,done a driveshaft ,it was nice to chuck it up in there ,before i had to go off spindle centers and always had length problems! like i said its "chinese made "BUT it sure is accurate!!!!!! -im thinking i will buy a read -out and a steady rest for it .the read out will make things easier to do& quicker !

Re: big lathe
Any idea what the current rating is on that converter? A single phase to 3 phase converter coupled with a 240/440 transformer can be tricky. Is that a rotating converter or solid state? Probably need to do some math and make sure you aren't pushing things to the limit. That sounds pretty close to me. Don't want to let any of that valuable smoke out.

Re: big lathe
Wow, nice equipment you have there. Do you do work for the public or are these just for your stuff?

Re: big lathe
It's not that difficult to size a VFD but a 3 phase VFD can get pricey. I install, program and service them all the time. It would be a fun project.

Re: big lathe
I got to see a 50 ft lathe when I was in Holland Michigan doing training at the Buhler factory. They turn the tie bars for large die cast machines.
