WTB Stock 71 72 Disc Brake Spindles or aftermarket stock height to convert 68 to disc

Like the title says. I want to convert my 68 to disc brakes. Want stock 71 or 72 disc brake spindles in good condition. Or will consider aftermarket stock height to convert 68 to disc. I plan on rebuilding my entire front end so I know I'll have to change the ball joints and tie rod ends.

Do you want rotors & calipers as well, or just the spindles? I have a set of spindles already pulled that still have the rotors & calipers on them.

I don't need rotors. I already have new CPP 6 lug rotors. I have to imagine they would significantly increase the shipping cost also.

I'm looking for 1/2 ton spindles only.

The calipers would be a bonus if I could use them for cores.

I can't really tell in your picture how rusty those spindles are.

I've got a pair of 71, 1/2 ton spindles in good condition for $75 + shipping. I can get a quote and pics tomorrow.

Let me get them out today and take a closer look. I am pretty sure just surface rust and I could include the calipers. The rotors would add a lot of un needed weight so I will get everything measured up today & get a shipping quote if they do still look good.

Jason
Very shallow minor pitting behind the calipers. I don't think would be seen with the calipers on. Both Calipers and spindles in the pictures $120 shipped. Getting rid of the calipers only change the shipping by $5 so I figured they are worth more to you for a core. I did not include the back plates bc they are junk but I put the screws back in the spindles as well as the castle nuts and washers to help keep the threads from getting damaged in shipping.

Richard

PP is in my sig. if you want them.

Plan on using conversion tie rod sleeves or using 71-72 centerlink as well.
You can't just install 71-72 outer tie rods to your current steering.
Personally,... I would buy stock or dropped 63-70 "conversion" spindles and change nothing else.

Re: WTB Stock 71 72 Disc Brake Spindles or aftermarket stock height to convert 68 to

Well, that throws a wrench in my plans. I didn't realize the centerlink was different also. Makes sense though. I was going to replace sleeves and tie rods. I already have some of the parts to rebuild the front end using the 68 parts and was going to have to replace some of them to go with the 71-72 spindles. I'm going to have to figure out what the cost difference would be. Looks like the conversion sleeves are $50 and that combined with the other parts I already have will probably make it more economical to do the conversion spindles. What got me thinking 71-72 spindles would be cheaper was when I saw someone sell a set for $70 shipped.

Richard...you don't happen to have a centerlink as well?

The last time I had spindles shipped it cost the owner $50 just to ship them.

You can use your 68 centerlink.
BUT,... you have to install 67-70 outer tie rods at the INNER location.
Then add the $50 conversion sleeve.
Then use 71-72 outers to connect only to a 71-72 spindle.
73-87 trucks use a different outer and upper ball joint,... so that leave the option for 73-87 spindles.

The problem is in the tie rods thread pitch and thread diameter.
67-70 outer tie rods are 5/8" diameter and left hand thread.
71-72, and 73-87 outer tie rods are 11/16" diameter and right hand thread.

All that info is listed in my BIG thread on disc brake swaps.
I don't think people read it because some think its too confusing.
I just tried to cover all the POSSIBLE swap configurations.
Look here if you haven't:

Re: WTB Stock 71 72 Disc Brake Spindles or aftermarket stock height to convert 68 to

67-70 truck with

71-72 Crossmember Not Yet Installed:
1) Your truck's donor 71-72 crossmember came from the factory with disc brakes.
* You can swap out the entire 67-70 crossmember in one unit.
* Only a few holes will need to be drilled or elongated.
* The best option is to use all of the 71-72 steering components.
(centerlink, tie rods, idler arm, steering box and pitman arm)

2) 67-70 steering linkage use a different centerlink and tie rods, than the 71-72 crossmember you will be installing.

3) 67-70 tie rods are 5/8" diameter,... 71-72 tie rods are 11/16" diameter (with the opposite thread direction).
* 67-70 inner tie rods are RH thread vs. 71-72 inner tie rods (that are LH thread).
* 67-70 outer tie rods are LH thread vs 71-72 outer tie rods (that are RH thread).
* Again,... It's easiest to just use all of the 71-72 steering linkage.
* You can also use all of the 73-87 steering linkage, but you will have to change the outer tie rods to the 71-72 version to match the 71-72 spindle.

4) If you must use your 67-70 centerlink and inner tie rods:
* You will be require to use a "conversion" tie rod sleeve to connect the 67-70 5/8" diameter tie rod,... to the 71-72 11/16" diameter outer tie rod.
* Here is the problem: The 67-70 inner tie rod is RH thread. The 71-72 outer tie rod is also RH thread.
* To correct this,... you must use a 63-70 outer tie rod in the inner location.
* (The 67-70 outer tie rod is LH thread)

5) If you just want to add 71-72 spindles to your existing 67-70 a-arms,... you will need to change the 67-70 upper and lower ball joint to 71-72 upper and lower ball joints.
* The outer tie rod will have to be a 71-72 outer tie rod also. (see Step #4 above)

6) Rubber brake hoses:
* You must change to a disc brake style hose.
* Early Classic Enterprises, and other suspension vendors, make a "conversion" brake hose that will connect the disc brake caliper, to the original 67-70 brake hose steel line location.
* 71-72 hoses is another option. (but I haven't personally confirmed if the steel line connection is the correct size).
* Another option is to use 73-87 hoses, (cheaper to purchase), but they are much longer, and also may need fitting adapters.
* Aftermarket steel braided hoses and AN fittings is another option.

7) You can also just swap all the components from the a-arms out and leave your original 67-70 crossmember in place.
* This will require you to completly disassemble both the original 67-70 suspension and the 71-72 donor suspension.
* This is also a good time to clean, inspect, replace or rebuild any needed components.

This is why I preach to use conversion spindles.
All new parts.
No rusty parts.
No balljoint change.
No tie rod change.
They are sold in the following sizes:
60-62 (for the torsion bar trucks) and 63-70 (most common drum brake truck)

Jason,
I don't think I have an extra one at the moment. I sold the one that was with these a month or so ago. The shipping on the spindles & calipers was right at $40

Re: WTB Stock 71 72 Disc Brake Spindles or aftermarket stock height to convert 68 to

Thanks to everyone that chimed in here. Yesterday when ebay had a $15 off $75 coupon I went ahead and got the conversion spindles for $200 delivered. I went through my parts yesterday also and I already had upper ball joints for 68 and a single tie rod end and adjusting sleeve and one of the upper control arm shafts.

I was looking at pricing on rockauto for the rest of the parts and have come up with everything I need for almost $100 less than what the 71-72 parts would have cost. The 71-72 ball joints are almost double what the 63-70 are. Combine that with the more expensive tie rod ends and it really adds up.

Still need calipers. Going to try to find some cores locally to save some money. Or I'll just go to oreilly's or napa and buy them.
