How to replace door hinge spring?

Can anyone tell me how to replace the door hinge spring (keeps door open) on a 1976 C10 door?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

I have a broken spring as well on my driver's door. I have seen discussion in the past where one person said he was able to install a spring with the door on the truck using a long screwdriver. I have not been able to do it with the hinge in place. Everyone else I have seen discuss it said the spring must be installed with the hinge off the truck.

I hope someone has a nice solution.

I just hold up the door (I have a door lift but you can improvise) take off the door and hinge and replace it. it doesn't take very long. I've never been able to get it in w/o removing it.

I have, but its hard to put in words. Put in spring, use big bent screw driver to twist spring and hammer in to place. Matt

I changed just the S shaped spring with the door still on the truck. Open the door all the way and put the S spring into the top slot first, with it slid as far down as it will go. Then make sure its lined up in the middle slot in the hinge. Then, using the door, start to close it slightly. You will see where the stock "little wheels" will push on the bottom part of the S spring. Close the door enough to where the S spring is lined up with the bottom slot. Use a small hammer and lightly tap it till it seats in the bottom slot.

They also make a tool that compreses the spring. Works really slick.

I know this is old but just wanted to say this was a great thread. I installed S clip on drivers door by using this method. I used a hybrid of ureckme and justins76 method. I just put spring in and then used a big pry bar until I could close door and the first little wheel pushed into spring. I no longer needed the pry bar after that just a small hammer. I pushed door closed just a little more and the bottom of S spring hammered into place effortlessly.

Re: How to replace door hinge spring?

I have to try this..My passenger side spring broke about 4 years ago. The door hits my wife all the time because she still expects it to stay open.

Re: How to replace door hinge spring?

i dont think i ever did one on a full size but for the s10s they sell a tool. but before i used the tool i used to put the springs in a vise but left a little bit sticking out so i could run some thin wire through ti to keep it compressed, stuck the spring in and cut the wire. thankfully i never lost a eye doing it that way

Re: How to replace door hinge spring?

I did it with just a flatbar.

Worked like a champ.
