Did '71 Come With Accessory Ignition Switch
working on a '71 GMC basket case and not sure what the ignition switch that's currently in it came out of, it doesn't seem to have an accessory position just what seems like OFF, ON, and START. I mounted it in the dash next to the heater. Question is, is that the right switch for the truck or did they have accessory in 1971? hope this makes sense,
I am asking because my alternator is showing a constant load of about .88 amps even with the truck off and key out of the ignition, this needless to say drains my battery, I am running a one wire setup with the regulator deleted, I have the same setup on my '74 and that works great |

All 1967 and some early '68's did not have an accessory position on the switch. The accessory terminal on the back of the switch was hot in the run position. Most '68's and all others after that had the accessory position.... LockDoc

Re: Did '71 Come With Accessory Ignition Switch
AC Delco recommends the same ignition switch as the one I put in my '70:
http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....031690&jsn=467 My does have an accessory position. If you turn the knob to your left I will go into accessory. I hope this helps. |

Re: Did '71 Come With Accessory Ignition Switch
The answer to your question is YES.
So how come you have a '67 Ign Sw? Back in the day there were only 2 parts sources, the GM dealer and the junkyard. The dealers' parts were sometimes pricey, so most folks used the junkyard option. In the predawn of time a PO put an ignition switch from a '67 in your '71. Probably didn't care about frills like ACC, just needed the truck running for work in the morning.
