What are these....

I have what I thought are two identical 250 engines, but I notice that one of the heads has 6 bolts coming off the top side at an angle. Haven't got around to dissassemble yet but can someone tell me about them. Also wondering what this thermal coil doodad thing is on the exhaust manifold. Doesn't look like it attaches to anything that it would control.

The 'bolts' are actually plugs. Plugging the holes for the air pump injection tubes.
Just a guess but I think the cover covers the coil for the heat riser.

Can someone elaborate on the air injection tubes......does it have to do with emissions, would that make it a later model head? I havent gotten around to looking up any casting numbers yet. Thanks for the info so far.

I bought a low-mile '68 Biscayne with a 250 that had air injection. Yes - it was an early emission thing. There was a belt-driven air-pump and metal tubes that went into those ports in the head.

I sold the pump to a Corvette restorer for a decent buck and plugged the holes with pipe plugs.

Everything looks original except the cats paw, definitely not an original part for that exhaust manifold.

Could the "thermal coil doodad thing" be the thermal coil for the choke on the carb?

That's too funny...very observant. I didn't even notice the paw. That's my rodent control for the shop, her name is shop tat. She's fearless, she will literally sit in my lap while I weld and grind or whatever.

I don't see how anything could be controlled by the coil thing....nothing attaches to it.

A rod was used to attach to the coil spring inside which attached up to assist the choke on the carb , I have a few 250 spare exhaust manifolds I'll post a picture later .
