Help me identify what the hell I purchased :)

Hey guys, new to the forum and have had a great experience so far.

So....I purchased a 72 C10 for dirt cheap. It was stuck in 1st gear and the guy offered me a price I couldn't refuse, so I test drove it in 1st and looked it over at nighttime in his driveway with my iPhone light. I was expecting to find a "350" stamp on the block but found 880 instead. I'm guessing this is a newer block. Im a bike guy and new to the truck thing so I need help identifying what the heck I have under the hood. I'll post pics and please comment on anything and everything you see. There are some obvious issues like electronic fuel pump hanging off side/not bolted, cracked exhaust manifold etc...

I want to know what I have so I can begin researching and starting off on the right track. Also, I'll need to address the exhaust soon and want to order headers so any recommendations would be excellent. I was going to order them before I found out it wasn't the original block and wanted to make sure whatever I order will fit.

Any and all input is greatly appreciated. Thank again.

Looks like the kind of SBC engine one would see in a truck in '72. The headers for that era truck will fit fine. Maybe not the original engine. Someone will chime in to make that certain. I don't have all those codes handy.

Re: Help me identify what the hell I purchased :)

It's a small block Chevy engine, guessing late eighties due to the oil dipstick coming up on passenger side and still having the 4 bolt valve covers. 67-72's oil dipstick was on drivers side of engine. No big deal since it doesn't have AC, compressor would cover it up if it did. Also electric fuel pump gives clues of no port for mechanical fuel pump. I see the reason for considering headers, broke manifold! You could go either way with exhaust, replace original manifold or new headers. To me a good thing is they reused the original short water pump setup, pullys and accessories. It's getting harder to find those parts if going back original. Besides the engine swap, the rest looks to be fairly original. Has power brakes, steering and clean original looking paint on firewall and fenders. Got any more pictures?

Re: Help me identify what the hell I purchased :)

Thanks everyone!

Chevy nut, which pics would you like? I can snap more later today for sure. As far as headers, anything for a 350 small block will work? I’d like to get those on order ASAP so the neighbors on my culdesac don’t kill me I’ve read good things about Summit Racing brand ceramic coated headers...

Mu Suburban has an 880 block. I pulled it from a '99 Ambulance conversion Van. Vortec, 4 bolt main, steel crank, powdered metal rods, roller cam. It seemed like a good base to build an engine.

I am so glad I removed the headers the previous owner installed and went back with Ram horn manifolds. The headers were noisy and required too much maintenance.

We all love pictures, so any exterior, interior pics of your truck you want to share is good. On the exhaust, we all have different opinions. I myself would just replace that broke manifold with same. The ram horn manifolds are original to truck year and would be quickest, cheapest fix. Plus they function and sound good too!

Good to know. Since I only need the one side replaced, maybe I'll just order that for now and go form there. I am guessing all small block chevy manifolds will fit? I found this...

This should be a direct fit, ya?

Unfortunately, I parked it in my small garage as soon as I got it home. Here is a pic from the seller. I'll take a few more but they won't be great until I get it out of the garage.

Looks to be makings of a nice truck! Yes, that manifold should work. You should also get new flange bolt kit and donut gasket. Makes for easier swap. Just had same problem happen to me this past summer.

Sounds good. I'm not sure how I'd make 100% sure that manifold will direct fit. I guess I'll just hope for the best! I finally got the tranny linkage put back together today so I took it around the neighborhood for a test drive and snapped some photos.
