The connection on top of the water pump should be plugged and routed to the fitting under the radiator cap. That's your return line; from the firewall to the radiator. Agree with this 100%. The return line should run from the heater core to the radiator on the TBI trucks. The top of the water pump should have a plug in it. Also, that rear coolant port on the intake manifold should have a metal restrictor in the gasket. If that's not in there it can cause problems too.
