700r4 tranmission Question

I'm working on the wiring on my 58 Fleetside.Wiring is coming along. On my 54 I have a 700r transmission in that as well,it has a switch on the trans that only lets me start the truck in park, this is kind of a pain,if ya are moving and the truck dies I need to come to a complete stop, put truck in park and restart.I want things different on my 58 with same 700r transmission.I need to be able to start truck in Park and neutral also since I'm putting in back-up camera on truck I need reverse indication also.is there a way to do this?

Re: 700r4 tranmission Question

I am curious what type of switch you have on your '54. I have never seen a park switch on a 700R4. It is always on the shifter on OE applications. Is it externally mounted?

With a little ingenuity, pieces from a 4L60e might be able to fitted to a 700R4 to give you the functionality of a P/N switch

Yes it is externally mounted on the 54. I think it came from Summit or Jegs

Re: 700r4 tranmission Question

i have a 86 astro column with the nss that only works for park and backup light and had my efi motor die while rolling thru a left turn
so why call it a nss? it should be a pss

some gm column mount nss have the neutral start position as my 63 chevy II powerglide could start in neutral
if you change to a newer column on your 58, i'd use the column mounted switch

if you have the lokar type nss you should be able to add a second leg to the linkage for the neutral position
with the lokar design it only has one switch, a 2nd switch needs to be added for backup lights

lokar includes the double arm for park and neutral and a single arm for backup in the kit

Re: 700r4 tranmission Question

This one isn't cheap but it also is setup to work with led shift indicator lights. https://www.ronfrancis.com/prodinfo.asp?number=GS-70D

I would call and ask on the neutral switch thing though.

Lights here with switch sets and what not https://www.ronfrancis.com/searchprods.asp

Looking at the Lokar catalog you do need the double arm for the Lokar switch to start in both park and neutral. The single arm is intended for the backup lights.
Another solution might be to put a push button starter button in an easy to reach spot (maybe under the edge of the dash) that you wire in so you can bypass the neutral switch if the engine dies at an inopportune time. Start in park when you are sitting so that it is in park and doesn't jump and be able to start it in neutral or in gear if it does die.
