Mismatched rear end, verify what I see please :)
Ok, so I literally read just about every thread on the different 12 bolt length and axle types, and I'm trying to figure out what is in my truck. My 12 bolt has a 69 date which is correct to my truck, 57" flange to flange, which is the shorter 12 bolt afaik, but it is a 5x5 lug pattern, and has the 71 style brake drums/system. What I believe I have is the longer axles in the shorter rear end, I notice that the brake pads are not even close to making full contact on the drums. Do you guys agree with my assumption that someone just threw in the longer axles to make it a 5 lug without regards to proper brake contact?
Thanks for the help. Pad width: Pad Wear: Axle distance sticking out: Drum/backing plate fitment: drum Wear: Last edited by superhondaz50; 12-16-2017 at 07:57 PM. |

Re: Couple differential and axle questions
Anyone see an issue with just adding a spacer between the backing plate and differential to scoot the pads further into the drum?

Re: Couple differential and axle questions
I know a guy that ran some for yes. Never had any problems. Guess it would depend also how much hp and your intended use for the truck. His were made from steel and obviously used grade 8 bolts.

Re: Couple differential and axle questions
Should have said years instead of yes, but I can’t guarantee you won’t have problems. I can only say what he did.

Re: Couple differential and axle questions
Bumping this to see if anyone else here has ran the longer axles in the shorter housing.

Re: Couple differential and axle questions
Do yourself a favor and get the correct length conversion axles, or have stock 67-70 axles redrilled to accept a 5 lug wheel. Nobody will be running that combo on purpose that I am aware of.
A lot of cats have just slid the 71-72 longer axles in and called it good, not knowing that the brakes don't line up and the bearings aren't running on the axle in the right spot. So even using the non-existent "spacers" will do you no good. I have a 1969 housing that I am using moser conversion axles with the 5 lug patten. They work great. Cost me about $260 bucks with free shipping from Summit Racing. Gary

Re: Couple differential and axle questions
I ordered mine straight from moser. You can get options that way. I run a car 5 on 4 3/4 bolt pattern and screw in studs. You can also order them drilled in a dual pattern incase you wanted to change...

Re: Couple differential and axle questions
Would be cool to have them drilled for 14x1.5 lugs.
