You would need new front springs! Unless you want your truck to be lowered in the process, that diesel weighs a whole lot more than a small, or big block. You will need the computer and everything that is hooked to that engine from the donor truck. I wouldn't worry too much about the radiator IMO (grab it just in case), diesels don't generate too much heat (they do run at ~210*, instead of gassers ~180*), espically at idle.

i have a 6.2 diesel w/ banks kit in my 84 blazer. it has its pros and cons, its definalty heavy motor 1/2 ton blazer weights 5800 lbs! i do however get 21 mpg. most of the 6.2 have a mechanical fuel injection pump, so theres no computers on that thing. its got decent power i guess but any of the latest generation diesels will be a lot better. its a pain in the you know what to work on, everything is dirty and a very tight fit, in a full size truck engine compartment. i would try and get a manual for it, i have the 700 r4 and after a while it drives me nuts, diesels are much happier with manuals.

Actually the 6.2 is not that much heavier than a big block. When I got my 72 from my uncle he had put an 84 6.2 into it years earlier.I switched the diesel out for a big block so this comes from experience! You will need to get the engine wiringharness, hook up a light in the dash to let you know when the glow plugs are charged and you will need to modify your stock engine towers so the exhaust manifolds will clear. It is not too hard of a swap in,but after driving the truck both ways,I would rather swap in a big block...

Im going to run biodiesel. thats why Im putting the 6.2 in one of my trucks. A guy here at work makes it from waste vegetable oil that he gets for free at a restraint. Claims he can make it for under 50 cents per gallon. Im not an expert on the process, but if you guys are interested check out this web site:

Does anyone know where I can find engine mounts for this converstion????

I know that the Cummins Diesels weigh just under 3000 Lbs,and so do the Detroit Diesel 60 series. We used to have 2 of them in the shop here for sale on consignment. Thats a sh!t load of weight to put on a front end. I have a turbo Cummins in my 98 Dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 and it has had the front end done in it 3 times already and it only has 70,000 miles on it. Dodge needed to use 1 ton front ends in these Cummins trucks.

This may take some trial and error, but the 73-87 came with the 6.2, and the engine towers from that gen truck fit darn near perfectly in our rigs...fine one of those trucks and rob it of it's detail parts.
I would personally look for an early 6.5, it was less doggish than the 6.2 was. You'll need a BOP tranny if memory serves, and an aux battery tray with the two betteries run in parallel would be a good idea too.

I would love a 6.5. But, I made a mistake and bought before investigating..... I got the engine for 100 bucks though.... So its not that bad. I guess the best thing to do with the 6.2 is slap on a set of 6.5's heads.... and upgrade the crank.

The 6.2 I had in the truck was a mean motor. It was all stock 84 motor and would run circles around tuners and other diesels. I almost regret getting rid of the diesel, but my driving habets and non use of the truck did not warrent one...

From the sounds of it I guess I had the wrong 6.2 diesel. It was in a Suburban and the things I can remember from the top of my head. Rebuilt transmission $1200.00, Head Gasket $2500.00, Radiator recored $585.00, Glo-Plugs $125.00 w/me installing them, 3 different starters with the last one decided to break the bolts from the 22:1 Compression. Rebuilt Fuel injection pump $425.00. That is what I can remember. It all happened within 6 months after buying it. Glad it was under warranty. The day it was out of warranty I traded it off. The dash caught on fire while I was on the way to the garage to trade it in. I latter talked to a service manager at Collins GMC about the bad luck I had with the Suburban. He described it to me and told me the same Suburban that I used to own was a nightmare to him. He said that everything I mentioned to him except for the radiator was still under warranty from GM. He knew the doctor that used to own it had sold it and was hoping the new buyer (Me) never found out about the warranties. He told me this after he found out were the Suburban went. Mine was a dawg for speed and it got 16MPG on the Highway. Good Luck with your 6.2.
