I had a similar problem on my 67 and I figured out it was a loose hose clamp on the rubber line between the pump and the line filter before the carb. Turns out it was just enough of a leak to drain the line and the float without leaving much indication.

OK not trying to be a smart a$$, but how would that drain the float bowl? Fuel enters from the top of the carb not from the bottom.

When the fuel drains out of the rail, line and filter and refills enough times eventually dirt and debris worked in the system ( if fluid can leak out dirt can get in) and got in the needle and seat and drained the primary bowl. I was in the middle of an appointment when I posted earlier and left that part out.

Most times things like this are a process of elimination
So start with the easiest first.
Next time it won't start manually close the choke at the carb while I buddy tries starting it. Like several of us suggested also see if gas is squirting down carb. Two of the simplest things to do that tell you a lot.
If that doesn't help then move on to fuel line, fuel pump or carb components.

The Edelbrock carbs are really sensitive to both heat and cold weather. They require a specific amount of fuel pressure, Edelbrock recommends their fuel pump, as someone else mentioned the heat plate, I would personally suggest a fuel pressure regulator too.

If after you connect and adjust your electric choke:

Try a fuel pressure regulator. Set it at 5 psi. - No more than 6.5 psi. If you have a stock fuel pump it could be dumping fuel too.

The Heat Plate that was mentioned is to keep the gas from boiling in the bowls. (vapor lock, hard starting in hot weather) Heat will radiate through the intake up into the carb and cause you issues too.


So: Electric Choke, Fuel PRessure regulator at 5 psi and/or install Edelbrock's AVS fuel pump, then get you a carb spacer / heat plate for it. You'll see a big difference in the performance of your truck, AND the carb overall. Fuel economy will increase too.

You do not need a helper fuel pump, or a high performance one for that matter. Carbs don't need much fuel pressure to run correctly. Edelbrocks are pressure sensitive more so that other carbs. A stock style mechanical fuel pump is ALL you need.

I am not a expert but a 600 CFM carburator on a 383 CI engine sounds small and if you have a cam that is on the larger side 600 cfms definitly would be very hard to set up . Also are you runing a stock fuel tank if so have you checked the fuel sending unit sock (filter screen) it may be clogged / rotted . and also do you run a fuel filter if so have you replaced it.

Should be able to get it to start if you pump enough times. We ran into this exact problem on a grain truck last year. Tried different carbs, different fuel pump, still the same problem. We mounted a clear plastic filter right at the carb to see what was going on. Sure enough it wouldn't even pump enough fuel to fill that little filter. Replaced the rubber line all the way back to the tank. Problem fixed immediately. Filter filled up before the engine even started. Had to be a pin hole somewhere in the line allowing the pump to suck air and not pump enough fuel. There was no visible signs of leaks. Most I can help

I have 600 cfm carbs on a 350, 383 stroker and 454, all work great
