72 highlander
Hey guys, I'm looking for opinions or thoughts on rims for my 72, I'd like to paint and re do the original rally wheels. But could you post pics of your rims or opinions that may look good on this year of pickup. Thanks

Re: 72 highlander
Got pictures? What color is it? Is it 2-tone? Still pretty original? What is your overall look you are after?
Rallyes are not original to these trucks but are GM and are great for a truck you want to give a mild performance look to while not getting into aftermarket bling. I always called it the hybrid look, a step into what GM coulda/shoulda done.

Re: 72 highlander
Larger blackwall tires will help maybe some wide trim rings too.. Nice 72!!

Re: 72 highlander
That's a bad ass truck. I wouldn't paint anything. As for wheels, do what you like. If you ask everyone else's opinions, you're head is going to start spinning.

First of all, nice truck! I'm a big Highlander fan, just sold one and miss it already As Tim noted, rallies aren't original. But yes, they do look great on this era truck. Concur with 67swb, I'd go with blackwalls with a taller tire, or, at least raised white letters if you're gonna stick with rallies. Consider just how good a set of white steelies with caps would look though.. I'm real interested to see your SPID. If a package truck, it may have come with PA1s originally. Be glad they're long gone, they're not many peoples' cup of tea. If PO3s originally, then that might be a very attractive combo to return to with a white steelie. Just mentioning, am pretty sure you have your mind made up on the rallies, and that's cool, they do look good. If you repaint, I would definitely stick to the stock color combo, it's a good one. Would like to see more pics when you get a chance. Welcome to the board Seth. Shown below are the PA1 (from Highlander package trucks), PO1 full wheel cover, and PO3 hub cap (3/4 ton shown, but 1/2 looks same just a little smaller). My favorite is the PO3 for some reason, but I really like the PO1s also. I'd really only re-install PA1s if doing a full fledged resto on a truck that had them originally, and even though I'd have a hard time doing it. Just me though. Re: 72 highlander
There are a lot of nice caps and wheel combo's for these trucks......and it really comes down to 'what works for you'.
I think the original highlander PA1 caps are a little plain for me tho'. That said, here are (2) '72 Highlanders....one of them is my current truck and the one with the whitewalls was one I had years ago which was stolen and sadly never retrieved. My current truck has the PO1 caps on it and raised white letters (see pic) and the 'stolen' highlander had the whitewall/Po1 combo. When the tires are 'done' on my current highlander I will be going to a whitewall and a PO1 look similar to what Jocko posted in his pics and is what is on the other truck I had. All good Coley

Re: 72 highlander
Your truck came with P03 hub caps (top picture). But it would look killer with P01 full wheel covers (bottom picture).

Re: 72 highlander
Wheel covers (P01). Half ton chromed hub caps (P03). Someone else may know the year range of yours.

Nice looking truck!!!!! There's a Highlander discussion thread on here that you'd enjoy reading. I just put some 255/70/15 Cooper Cobras on my Highlander & love the look & ride

Re: 72 highlander
If you stay with the rally wheels, the skinny trim rings from the 89+ trucks look nice and tend to make the wheel look deeper.

Re: 72 highlander
Sorry to keep beating a dead horse, but where would or do you get the p03 hubcaps ? And do you just buy standard white rims to put the caps on?

Re: 72 highlander
You'd need GM 4-nub 5 lug disk brake wheels (they came on 71+ C10s (i.e. 2WD only, not 4x4s (K's)) until they switched back to 6 lugs in the 90s). Check the parts board or the local junkyards. The caps are not remanufactured - but they're often sold on the parts board as well. Member PICKMUP often has some beautiful ones to choose from. Member dave6672 had a set offered a few weeks ago, but they may be sold - might be worth asking. The blue bow tie versions (correct color for a 72) were available 69-72 and the yellow bow tie was available from 73-75 (and then all you have to do is paint the bow tie blue. Closest match anyone has found is Krylon "True Blue" in a rattle can.

If you do actually want wheel covers you can just pop them right on your rallye wheels. No need to buy wheels.

Re: 72 highlander
My truck is far from needing wheels, but I find my self dreaming about them and the older I get (48 yrs old) the more I like the stock white rims with caps Or the later model rally's. It's next to impossible for me to put steel wheels on a car, but trucks need to be trucks! Then again, I'm not fond of lowering, shaving, oversized rims, or chopping these old trucks either. The rally's with center caps and beauty rings look fantastic on your truck. If I go with aftermarket wheels they will have to be rather plain like the old centerlines or cragar 5 spokes. I have even thought about the even older style white rims with baby moons, BUT those really have their place on the pre-sixties vehicles. I have even thought about adapting a set of Pontiac Rally II wheels to my truck but don't like the idea of adaptors/spacers.
If I go with the rally's, centerlines, or cragars...I will also put on raised white letters. Otherwise, the white rims and caps will be black side out. I don't do whitewalls. Rally's might also look real special with color matched paint, but my truck will be like Rustytruck50's, but white over gray over white over gray, so gray wheels would not be too distracting from the truck. I have a few years to figure it out...good luck!
