driveshaft questions
hi everyone. in the planning stages for a 700r4 swap in my 68 c10. I have the 2 piece drive shaft, and its 2inches in diameter. there is a lady selling 2 one piece drive shafts out of late model silverado's. one is aluminum one is steel, both are a larger diameter but I'm not sure how big. I was wondering if I should convert to one piece shaft, or cut one down and use it as my front shaft and have it where the front shaft is larger than the back shaft. any advice? thanks all!

Or just cut down your front shaft.

What I need to know I guess is should I convert to a 1 peice or stay at 2 piece? One of the driveshaft is steel and one is aluminium, which one should I get? They are 4 1/2 inches in diameter I belive. Thank you!

Neither one.
Keep your two piece shaft. I assume you have a coil sprung Rearend. If so a 4 1/2 inch tube won’t fit thru the crossmember at the right angle. |

As horse power is increased, driveshaft diameter gets bigger because of what is called " moment of inertia". Aluminum driveshafts were used because it is less weight in motion for a slight increase in fuel economy. Downfall with aluminum is any driveline slop will ring louder with aluminum versus steel. And a slight reduction in unsprung weight i think.

Keep your original two piece and have it shortened and rebalanced to fit the 700r4...The two piece shafts will handle more rpm and torque than the one piece shafts...

I did the same swap years ago on my 70 c10. The cross member that the drive line goes threw will not allow for a one piece or I would of purchase one.
Just measure current drive line with new your
