Rear bumper question

Does this look like a stock rear bumper from a '72?
I got it with my truck but not sure if it was the original for it.
I am going to be selling a bunch of crap, Uh, i mean some quality used parts from my truck that i don't want or need, and i want to make sure of what i got as far as this bumper is concerned. It looks ratty but i think it is in pretty good shape. I never payed much attention to it until i need to move it for some reason and then think i need to get rid of it. it is heavy as heck.

thanks !

Doesn't look like a factory installed step and tow to me.

As far as I know, this was the only bumper chevy installed...Most trucks were ordered without rear bumpers and got dealer installed ones...ussally with the dealers name on them

Wow!
Great information.
I was just getting ready to post a question about the step bumper on my 72 Cheyenne Super 4x4.
Wasn't sure if it was original.
It is a step bumper. And it looks old.
But thay were all dealer installed options huh?
So many diffrent dealers could have used different bumpers right?
So a perfect restoration would / should include a rear chrome "sport style" bumper used on all the 2wd 1/2 to trucks?

My buddy has a bumper exactly like that on his 72 super. Don't know if it was stock or not though.

Metalman, I have one very similar to yours on my GMC. It doesn't have any dealer name, but is very heavy. I assume it was a dealer add-on. All I do know is the rear part of a step bed won't sit down right with that kind of bumper because of the tall brackets get in the way.

i am going to look at it again this weekend and see if there is any stuff stamped on it.

I have the factory step bumper on the red truck. Non chrome. It is unique from aftermarket in that the area for the liscense plate is circular verses rectangular. It is listed on the option sheet. Rear bumpers have been an option on trucks for a long time. Most dealers sold an aftermarket bumper for cheeper then you could get one from the factory but it would have their name cut or welded into the bumper so you got to do their advertising for them!!!

Huck if you have one that is listed on the glovebox you should post a pic so every one can see what a factory step looks like...I just remember when these trucks were new...I went with my dad when he bought a new truck in 72...there were hundreds of trucks on the lot....they all had the bumper with the dealers name written across it...My 72 is fairly highly optioned...still have the dealer bumper laying out in the back yard

Bumpers...From my 71 resto pack from GM...

All trucks were equipped with a front bumper as standard. Standard RPO bumper was painted except for Cheyennes and Supers which had chrome fron bumper as standard.

The Chrome front bumper option # is V46.

The front AND rear chrome bumper option is # v37.

The rear painted bumper (not step and tow) is option # V38.

The Chrome rear bumper option (available with only Cheyennes and Supers) is # VF1

The rear step and tow bumper option is # V43.

The only bumper option # I've ever seen listed on a glove box is #V37. I would imagine that the build sheet would list more detail about the bumper option installed than the glovebox would.

So, you could get a front painted and a rear step, or you could get a front chrome and a rear step, or you could get painted front and rear, or you could get chrome front and rear. You could not get one painted and the other chrome however.

I also have a factory step and tow on my plow truck and most of the New England trucks had the fdactory ones. I've never seen a truck from this region with a "dealer" bumper. I've been told that the dealer bumpers were more prevalent in the south and west, particularly big in TX.

I don't know, how's this one compare, and does anyone know if it's original? This is on my friend's 67, and its 99% stock from what we can tell.

Definitely aftermarket. I had a 1969 C10 and a (forgive me) 1967 F-250 with that bumper.
