What was the stock rear bumper?

I'd like to put a chrome rear bumper on my truck, but I think I'll have to get a set of brackets too.

This has got me to thinking - I haven't seen a lot of our trucks with the stock rear bumper. I live in farm country and the trucks that I've seen, either on the road or at the wrecker, have some kind of aftermarket or locally built step bumper.

Did GM ship our trucks without rear bumpers so customers could choose? Maybe this was just the practice in farm country where I live? Any thoughts?

My 72 came from the factory with no bumper. My 69 step had no bumper, and the 68 had an aftermarket bumper. Whne I redid these I installed chrome bumpers from board dealers. LMC catalog is a good source for pictures (buy from others). Bob

Check out this post. It shows the factory rear bumper on a stepside, fleetside is the same I think. The post is "It's prom time".

Dean I'll bet that wasn't a factory bumper. I imagine it was a dealer added part. I believe most trucks didn't come with a factory bumper because most farmers wouldn't have any use for them purdy chrome ones... no where to put on a trailer.

That's why most trucks had step bumpers with a ball hitch hole.

JMO,

Steve

my '70 1/2 ton has the same bumper as Dean's truck. As far as I'm concerned, it is factory. There isn't a stamped in address or whatever from the dealer.

It is a factory bumper and listed on the option sheet. Truck was original paint with approximately 25,000 miles when I bought it from original owner's estate.

It is not chrome. I had it powder coated.

That appears to be the same bumper that is on a 1972 that I found in a Mopar Dealer's junkyard. None of the pictures posted really shows the bumper on the truck very well.
Here are the factory options:

Deans 100% correct

One of my 72 4x4s had a factory step bumper listed on the glovebox and it was the spitting image of Dean's example. They came painted silver/gray color. The regular rear bumper often refered to here as a sport bumper was available in painted white or chrome. These were the three options available to fleetside pickups as no bumper was standard on any models through 72.

I'm guessing this is a tow bumper and installed at the dealer along with my "Travel Tanks"
