windshield sealent ?

It seems that a lot of us have trouble getting windshields not to leak. I will be installing mine soon and don't want to do it twice, or more, because it leaks. After 50 years or so, the lip that is central to it all is rarely "perfect". So is there a sealent or some other "trick" that could aid in this? My 66 GTO uses a 5/16 "ribbon sealent" and a "window weld resealent" for the windshield, made by 3M. Would/could these be appropiate for our 67-72 trucks or are we stuck with trusting a new rubber mounting strip and a prayer? Or maybe just pay a glass shop to do it and make sure they guarantee it not to leak!!!!!

Make sure that if you use a sealant it's a flow-grade butyl rubber. That's the correct sealant for rubber gaskets. Many manufacturers used urethane sealant around the early 80s as they transitioned to urethane-set windshields, but that was a stopgap measure intended to meet newer structural requirements and isn't necessary for our trucks, and will likely mean your new gasket will be destroyed the next time you replace your windshield.

Your GTO doesn't use a rubber gasket. The glass is glued to the pinchweld with the ribbon sealer, which is a heavier butyl rubber. It's a different type of installation.

The Factory service manuals in the body section tells you to Use sealant along with the seal during install to prevent leaking so the answer is of course use sealant.

It's been a while since I took a look at it, but I believe it specifies 6 or 8 inches at the top corners. Having been in the glass business for years, I found that they rarely leaked anywhere else unless it was a bad installation (bunching in the seal) or there was an issue with the windshield frame.

Is that between the glass and the rubber seal or the rubber and the body channel?

Between the rubber and the body.

Has anyone had the glass and rubber seal leak? I'm asking because that's what it looks like in my 69 C10. When it rains I see water come up from the rubber seal and drip down on the dash, drips on both lower corners. It is a new seal and glass installed by the previous owner.

Try using some sealant 6 inches over and 3 inches down from the top corners, between the rubber and the cab and see what that does. Also be sure and check the drip rail for any bad spots in the sealant there.

I had to use windshield sealant in the upper corners of mine only, but that was after a dry installation.

I applied some windshield sealant this afternoon so when I get some rain I’ll see if it worked

Unfortunately my windshield still leaks. The dripping on the floor is less but the water coming in around the seal and glass at the bottom is still happening. I'm not sure what the next move is, I don't want to remove the glass and seal since they are new.
