Looking to get an ls motor--- need opinions
I know this is a somewhat vague question but I'm looking to find an ls motor for my 68 swb. Is one motor better than the other? Is there something I should avoid? I'm thinking 6.0 Opinions?
Might go turbo in future. Is steel block better than aluminum? Drive by wire or cable? My plan is to find a complete running vehicle and steal the motor. I plan on a tko 600 Thanks in advance |

Two additional questions:
1) What's the size of your wallet? 2) What's the end use of the '68?

Re: Looking to get an ls motor--- need opinions
if your looking for 6.0s the lq9 is the one to look for...not cheap though...345hp
the lq4 6.0 has around 322hp...also not cheap you would probably be cheaper and better off in the long run to look for a ls3 and tr6060 or tko600 combo....ls3 is 6.2 at 425hp...no need for a turbo on that...I bought a ls3 tr6060 for 6500...I was considering a 5.3 or 6.0 turbo but decided it was cheaper with what I got... I personally prefer the dbc...but my ls3 has dbw and I'm going to use it that way I think both steel and alum blocks are fine..biggest difference is the weight...both are built very strong..

Re: Looking to get an ls motor--- need opinions
I don't have a budget in mind. I'm looking for a strong solid motor. I am old school and prefer a carburetor and intake over fuel injection but I like the ls package. I know i know. Losing the economy and smoothness of the injection
I just want a clean motor for a street truck. I don't need 1000 hp , Yet |

Re: Looking to get an ls motor--- need opinions
Biggest thing is not to get caught up in "i must have a 6.0" or "must have an aluminum block". Get the most complete engine you can with all the accessories and bits and ends you will need at a good price. most people who end up buying a short block and try to piece a engine together end up spending tons more money as opposed to buying a running pull out engine. They are all great engines and all work well and all make alot more reliable power than any old school sbc we are used to in these trucks- even the little 4.8 ls motor. Yes get a drive by cable engine with the 24x reluctor wheel- this will typically be a lm7. This will keep the easy to tune pcm and will also keep the simplistic engine internals i.e no need to get rid of dod valve train parts and swap intakes to get rid of direct injection etc... Any truck ls engine will make great power bone stock with a shot nitrous or any form of forced induction. plenty of 100 percent bone stock truck engines intake to oil pan out there making 500 plus to the wheels, especially through a stick shift like you plan to do.

Re: Looking to get an ls motor--- need opinions
I picked up a 6.0 with a 4l80e out of an 06 2500hd that rolled for $1500 with 150k on it because I wanted to hear it run and drive I also plan on cutting the harness down myself and taking the front seats and parting out the rest of the drivetrain I don't use to recoup some funds. I'm going single turbo so I wanted the 4l80 off the get go to handle more power so that drove my decision for a 6.0. The great thing about the LS series of engines is that so many parts are interchangeable that you can really take any engine and get your desired outcome without emptying your wallet.

For minimum pain if your budget allows for it, the GM packages are the way to go. I went with their LS3 crate setup and it was smooth sailing.
Even better are their "Connect and Cruise" packages that include the trans!
