72 250ci Fuel Pump Block off Plate - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I though this would be an easy project of swapping to electric fuel pump when I moved my fuel tank to the rear of the truck. the only issue i have at this point is finding a block off plate that isn't $40+.

2 Questions...
1.) would it harm anything if I left the mechanical fuel pump in place if I am using an electric unit?
2.)Does a SBC block off plate fit the I6? I haven't been able to see if they interchange, but they look very similar.

I took a fuel pump gasket, traced it out on a piece of aluminum, cut it out, drilled holes to match gasket and had a block off plate for the price of scrap. Steel or iron could be used also.

Mechanically nothing. I have kept a mech fuel pump on the 454 when I ran an electric pump to the rear tank on my '67 K/10 Suburban. [Actually it was the PO's set-up.] Came in handy one dark night when the electric pump died. I was able to connect the fuel lines back onto the mech pump and get home. Later, I replaced the PO's cheap pump with a Holley Red pump. I used a block off plate. Ran good for years.
Of course, if you're ditching the mech pump for performance gains of that much less friction on your cam, then keeping the mech pump on, negates the hi-performance value of the electric pump.
Block-off plates can't be that much. Are you shopping in Beverly Hills?
The L6 fuel pump gasket does look an awful lot like the BBC's. SBCs are different and have 4 bolt holes.
It's nasty and raining tonight, so I'll have to compare later.

Tom Lowe of 12Bolt.com said he had ''used SBC plates with success. They barely cover, but do get it done''.
Personally, I like lowbucktruck's lo-$ approach. Get a gasket, and trace out a shape on some aircraft skin, cut it out and drill the holes. There you go.

He probably used a big block blockoff. The blockoff for a sbc is not just the diamond shape of the fuel pump but shaped like a little house with 4 screws on the corners.

Yeah. That's what I told him. I described it [SBC] as a stretched ''homeplate'' with 4 bolt holes. He said there was also an SBC plate diamond shaped. I didn't argue, the guy's one of the Gods of the Inliner Universe, but maybe he doesn't know a BBC V8 from an SBC. Go figure.
The BBC block-off plate is a lot cheaper than $40 CAN in either Jeg's or Summit, or possibly your local hot rod shop or O'Reilly's if they have a ''candy store'' [hi performance parts section.]

No, I just took the fuel pump gasket and traced it out and used the two bolts. I also did the EGR on my vette's aluminum intake the same way. I didn't replace the bottom plate I don't think ( I did this 25 years ago and I have a bad case of CRS)

Actually, Buck, we were talking about somebody else on another forum, who said he used an SBC plate. We thought he may have been confused between BBCs and SBCs, being primarily an L6 guy.
Then I mentioned your trick, unrelatedly. Sorry.

Im sure the BBC would work if modded. I am by no means removing the mechanical pump for HP gains, I am not 100% sure it will suck the fuel from the rear of the truck when it has sat for a while (weeks or months at times). Would the Electric be a better option than mechanical for this aspect?

I hear www.mrhotrod6.com has a CNC block-off plate specifically for inlines. More symmetrical, but more expensive. About $25 before S&H.
