Proper way to engage 4 dig with manual tranny???

I'm new to 'older' 4x4's with manual transfer case and hubs. My 71's drivetrain is out of an 80 Chevy so I assume it has an NV465 and an NP205. I was curious to know if there was a proper way to engage the 4 wheel drive?

when my truck ran (hehe), I would lock the hubs, then put it in 4wd, then go.
on my old hub-loks, it says "put in 2wd before unlocking hubs" or something like that.
