How do you tell what year a bed is?

So my brother has a short step in really good condition. Problem is it didn't come on the truck. Someone put it on a Ford. Is there a stamp or a way to tell what year(s) it's from other than just by sight? He's wanting to sell it but wants to be accurate with the year.ill post some pics later today .

Does it have 67-72 style fenders? You know a '67 will have no side marker. If they are the prior style, it could be a '55-2nd design up top a '66. They used the same fenders. Those side steps have ribs that run front to back. The 87-72 have a break in the middle of the rib. If no fenders or steps, look at the bolt pattern for the shape of the fenders
