I'm at the junkyard help
Doing a l31 5.7 vortec swap in my 71. Will an alternator from a vortec engine work with existing wiring from my 71? Guess I should have figured that out before coming out here. Taking everything except the ac. Planning on ac delete pulley. I'll take ps pump but recall the fittings being different. Thanks

I would imagine you can make it work because it's internally regulated.

Take the ps pump...change the fitting from your original pump or make up a new hose with correct ends...only need pressure hose...
Alternator on L31 is internally regulated...you can make it work...check the boards for previous posts on how... I believe the serpentine water pumps rotate opposite to your old one...fan blades may be different... Have fun |

M&H wiring in Santa Fe Springs. Ca. Has an adapter harness that plugs into the existing harness and then into the alternator. With a part for the regulator plug. About $20 couldn't be easier or money better spent. Here's the link/

thanks for the replies. I'm off to media blast the drive accessory brackets today and then a coat of clear to lock in the shine. So does the connector from that company solve the alternator problem for me? Ive read about people having to go to larger guage wire so as not to burn things up from the increased amp output from newer alternators. Ive already had one fire. Don't want to go through that again.
Looks to me like ive already got a conversion to an SI type alternator(square plug to conversion cable to flat 2 connector plus power and ground I think) in the truck. Ill try to figure out the output of that and see if its anywhere close to the CS130D I have that fits the vortec brackets. If its not too much higher I wont worry, but I'm sure someone will chime in who has more experience than me. Thanks again, Kellen
