Battery voltage because witht he engine off it should read around 12, but with the engine running and alternator turning it should go up to around 13-14.

I believe your gauge is reading volts in the system (wires).
If the truck is not running then it shows battery volts only.

So is it bad if mine is a hair less the than the red? The needle isn't in the red just like where the line is before the red. So Im guessing that is 16?

You may want to verify with a multimeter that it is reading corectly. Charging that high will boil the water out of the battery so be carefull.

How would I check it? There does seem to be white stuff always on the battery tray. Im a little lost when it comes to the electrical side of things.

Using a mulittester/voltmeter, place the red lead of the tester on the positive battery terminal and the black lead on a ground/negative connection. You should get somewhere in the neighborhood of 13.5 to 14.2 volts, give or take a couple of tenths.

Just take the leads of the multimeter and conect (touch) them to the proper battery post. (red to (+) and black to (-)) with the multimeter set to show DC voltage in the range up to 20 volts. With the truck engine off it should read around 12 -13 volts for a healthy battery. With the engine running you would like to see about 15 volts. I'd get nervous around 16. You may want to rev the endine a little during this test because alternators are not very efficient at idle speeds.
Hope this helps.
