Transmission

I want to put a newer 4 or 5 speed in my truck. I'm not too concerned about losing the old transfer box as I won't be beating on it. 72 GMC 3/4 ton 4wd- will have a 4" lift and 33s.

What transmission would bolt up with a 70's 350?

Do you want an auto or manual. There are lots of guys running 700R4 autos in their K/5's I'm sure it would work in your 3/4 ton. Bolting up to the 350 isn't the big issue, it is the transfercase may cause problems. It depends on the output shaft on your current transmission. You can buy new adpters from http://advanceadapters.com/.

By the way, welcome to the board. We have a local club for people into these years of trucks. You can join the yahoo group at http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/CGTCW/. Our next meeting is at the Monroe Swap meet.

Post some pictures of your rig when you get a chance too.

Thanks for the info. I joined the club pending approval. When is the Monrow swap?

I think I want a manual. I say "think" because everyone tries to talk me into an automatic. Bottom line is that I like to shift. It's what I do for a living. My left foot would feel abandoned.

I not sure what transmission it is, but I was in my friends newer (2001?) chevy 3/4 with a 5 speed granny low. It was granny low, 1 thru 4 and 4th was an overdrive. Its also a cast iron transmission with an aluminum bellhousing, wish I knew more about it. My guess is that it is worth its weight in gold though.

Question transmission

Ballard Viking, I am with you. I also want a 4 or 5 speed manual tranny in my 72 3/4ton. I am really wanting a 5 speed with granny low and overdrive. Overdrive for better mileage and low just for fun. I have done some research and found this to be it. New Venture 4500, Chevy is putting them in newer 3/4ton trucks. I don't know if it will be possible to put it in our trucks. Can anyone help us out with this?

New venture 4500, huh, wonder what one is going for? Anything is possible, I would think the bellhousing would be the same so it would bolt to the motor and you could go one of two ways, either steal the factory transfer case too or I am sure advance adapters has something that will make bolting up a np208 possible. I sure AA has something to bolt a 468 to a honda accord 5 speed to a dana 200 to a np205 to fit in a jeep with toyota axles! Naming that truck would be easy, bastard!
