Crank pulley, up and down movement/wobble, ok?
My crank pulley has some up and down wobble when viewing from the front at idle that appears to disappear as the engine is reved up. Is this normal?
Balancer and crank pulley are both new. Thanks |

Sometimes it appears to wobble or move when watching it run but shouldn't be. If you can move it around with you hand, then I would drive very far from home. Its probably not going to go much further

No, it's tight,I can't move it with my hand, it just wobbles around doing the Michael J Fox thing (no offense intended), and smoothes out as rpm increases. I don't wanna kill any bearings or belts if it ain't normal.

Do you have access to a dial indicator? It would be good to know how much runout you have. I'm sure that some is allowed, but I am also sure that you shouldn't be able to see it with the naked eye. As for going away when revved up, that's just because your eyeball's frame rate isn't fast enough to capture it.

Ya, I'll check run-out tomorrow with the dial indicator. Any ideas how to center a crank pulley??

Did you install the balancer with an installation tool or the "big hammer" method? Did you make sure the crank snout wasn't worn? Was the key way new or used?
Unlikely, but some of the aftermarket balancers from Bangladesh are junk out of the box. Did you get a quality harmonic balancer? POP

No, I'm just kidding hahaha, I used a HB installation tool. The engine is brand new from GM, so keyway, woodruff key, etc is all new. The pulley is a USA made Billet Specialties unit. I'm thinking the flanged end on the pulley had a little play into the balncer causing some "lopsidedness". Need to find a good way to get ER on straight I think. |
