Okay, let me start by saying I tried to search for hours on end for an answer to these questions on the board. Maybe I'm wording it wrong or I don't know but not finding what I'm looking for. I am in the process of doing an L31 vortec crate engine swap. I still have a laundry list of parts to buy but have got most of the big stuff out of the way i.e. long block, intake, carb, fuel pump, relay kit, all drive accessories and brackets, alternator wiring and info THANKS VETTEVET, and power steering pump/steering box swap info etc...I may be forgetting some things here but its been a long week...
What I need to relieve my headache here are some first hand experience recommendations on a few parts so I can continue with the transplant. 1. throttle bracket for vortec head/edelbrock 7716 manifold setup with a th350. Ive found the edlebrock bracket but it gets horrible reviews. I will go with it if all else fails and make it work. 2. I have a starter(high torque mini some off brand) from the old motor which is from a 65 pickup(it has the 4 hole provision for 153 or 168 tooth flywheel. Mine is 168 one piece rear main style). not sure if it will bolt onto new motor. id look but its at the shop and I'm trying to button up my shopping list. so is it an offset/diagonal on the new block? metric vs sae? block number is 10243880. L31 HD 5.7 crate 3. fuel pressure regulator, bracket, guage for the fuel system. I bought a holley mighty mite(which ive found to get terrible reviews but not til after I purchased it) part number holley 12-427. Its a 4-7 psi pump and carb I bought is a summit 600cfm which calls for 5-7 psi. I assume I should still run a regulator and I am not planning on running a return system(tank still in stock location behind seat). 4. Fan options for this water pump which is a spin on hub style. I have the junkyard find but not sure I want to run it with the used clutch or how to test clutch. 5. Headers that fit without modification in our trucks with L31 crate engine. Keeping in mind frame rail clearance and starter etc. I have some already bolted up from old engine but they are getting pretty crusty and rusty and I'm not sure the brand. They came with the truck and I'm sure they are a cheap set. Trying to stick with long tubes so I don't need to modify the rest of the exhaust system. If anyone has experience with this I would appreciate some feedback and thank you in advance! chefk85

Hello I have recently done the same swap. I can tell you were I am at with mine in the hope it may help.
1. I bought the Edelbrock TV bracket and yes it is not even close so don't even waste your money. I have yet to find exactly what I am looking for. 2. I am using a mini starter ACDELCO 88877121 on a 168 tooth flywheel. I added a diode to the wire harness. 3. I am running a 5 psi Spectra SP1130 electric fuel pump w/o a regulator and so far no problems on a 500cfm Edelbrock 1802 carb. A regulator on anything over 6 psi is a good idea. I also wired it with an inertia switch just in case. 4. I did the Jeep Grand Cherokee fan mod (found on this sight) in a stock fan shroud. Worked out well. 5. I am running swept back ram's horn manifolds so I can't help you much there. Best of luck on your build. |

I'd skip the complications of the regulator. I've been running an 8psi Carter mechanical strip pump on my Camaro for years with no pressure issues. It runs right at 8 WOT. The Holley Red pump wouldn't put out more than 1 psi WOT.

First you buy their bracket, then 200 bucks later you find your into the kickdown cable assembly and everything for a total of about 3 bills! I found a fabricated solution Edelbrock would just %#$&. I modified one of their 10 dollar dodge parts on my Chevy. I will post a pic later, you will need a quadrjet ball stud to do this for a carb'd application.
