Re: Numbers on firewall?

There was a long post on this subject last year. Some plants used more crayon marks than others. If there were any marks on my '68 Fremont-built C/10 stepside when I bought it in 1973, I probably went after them with rubbing compound and fresh Turtlewax. ''Damn graffitti, Grrr @#^&*%$, Out damn spot!''
Now, they're revered as some sort of provenance of originality. Fifty thousand dollar Barrett-Jackson trucks have unusually prominent firewall crayon scribbles -- no doubt a testiment as to the mint originality of the truck offered.
I don't want to name anybody specifically, as making fake firewall markings, but LMC will sell you the same kind of big crayons that the factory used.

It's actually a grease pen, and restorers have been using them for years. They use photos that they took before tear down to recreate what was originally on the firewall.

I vividly remember removing the marks on mine when the truck was new. I should have taken a picture of the graffiti first as well as many more of the truck, but film was expensive, and who knew I'd still had the truck after 5 or 10 years.

Drummerboy -- Grease pen, crayon, whatever. The French word for pencil is crayon.
FirstOwner -- IKR. Who knew?

Yes well thank you for that info. The grown up term is Grease Pen. At least that's what we call them at work.

Re: Numbers on firewall?

My truck has the original firewall markings as well. Passenger side are the model number and match the spid. The drivers side are only partially readable but what is readable make no sense. LS9XX38. They didn't even make the LS9 in 1972. It is a 72 chevy C20 Camper Special. Does the LS9 stand for something than an engine designator? TIA

Re: Numbers on firewall?

I worked at the GM truck plant in Flint and Pontiac Mi for over 33 years. The numbers on the firewall are the last few numbers of your vin. It’s so the workers would know what vin number the truck is and know what options to install.
