68 big block truck question

Hey guys am looking to maybe buy a 68 2wd 68 c10 short box cst truck and was wondering if there is a way to tell if it was an original big block truck if it doesn't have the spid plate on the glove box door ? Any help would be great

Re: 68 big block truck question

Location of engine, mounts, radiator size, shroud, overall appearance. Brackets and accessories. Possible heat shield on right hand side, dual exhaust brackets on frame.

Re: 68 big block truck question

Im pretty sure that the Big Block pass side heat shield started with the 69 model, so it shouldn't have one.

Couple other things to look for are, high hump floor, and power steering res should be mounted to the drivers side fender.

But a good way to tell is as kwmech said, check the frame, Big block trucks have factory dual exhaust, so check for factory hangers on the pass side of the truck.

If your truck came factory as a big block, I'd be quite surprised if someone put single exhaust on it. The parts books wouldn't show a single exhaust system, if they all came with dual exhaust.

Re: 68 big block truck question

With 68's being 50 years old, it may be difficult to tell some of these things.

Mine is a stock example, although was not in great condition when I got it, not much better now (I am reviving it slowly...LOL)

If the factory hangers are still on the pickup, the pass side would be the same as the driver side. Mine obviously had several sets of exhaust systems on it, in it's life time. Not sure the all the original hanger stuff is still on it. I will check one of these days to be sure.My pickup came with a muffler shop single exhaust on it, or at least what was left of it...

I'm not exactly sure about the heat shield on the ex manifold. I still have my manifolds, somewhere in the garage....seems like some type of sheet metal was riveted to one of them.

The high hump would be a for sure thing for a big block, but I wonder if all big blocks had power steering? That may not factor into all of them..Mine does have power steering, with remote reservoir.

The motor mounts AND the motor mount stands ARE different. It may be nearly impossible to tell the difference from a small block motor mount stand without having one in your have to compare.

The big block mounts have a large rubber cushion on the under side of the motor mount stand. Some vendors sell these mounts, I believe Brothers does, you may look on their sight to see what the mounts look like, for comparison.

The small block mounts only have the bolt and washer on the under side of the mount stand, no rubber cushion, The top sides of the big block and small block mounts look similar....FWIW...

Re: 68 big block truck question

If it has power steering, the remote can should have an extension holding it away from the drivers fender. Still bolted to the fender, but the can will be out about 5"

Re: 68 big block truck question

What the others said (except no heat shield in 68). Also it would have had a choke delete gauge cluster (no raised “choke” letters).

I’m in for some pictures!

I think mine bolted to the driver fender, I think. All these parts are in boxes...seems like I've seen some bolted to core support??? maybe I'm dreaming. So very few factory big block pickups...

No choke on my cluster.

Re: 68 big block truck question

not sure if you can tell, the driver side is a little easier to see the framme is cut back by the upper control arm. see how the frame narrows down. this is a 68 factory 396 truck.

I think all the 68's had the frames cut out for big blocks 67 did not.

If the spid is missing on the door and you want an original big block I don't think you could ever really prove that it was a factory big block. Just saying if you paying for originality better make sure it has the original spid.

Re: 68 big block truck question

Didn't Canada have a good handle on vehicles that were built in or delivered there? Maybe there is some registry information on the truck.

Here is a thread I posted with all of the different mounts/stands.....

Re: 68 big block truck question

Leon's picture shows the rubber cushion (68-71 big block) that is on the under side of the mount. The steel sleeve goes through the frame stand and into the mount that bolts to the engine. I'm glad to see someone making these now, I believe it's Brothers...GM used to be only source, I'm sure that dried up years ago...

Thanks Leon! Hope spring finally comes to Iowa, soon!!!
