i am about to paint a buddies 80 something cj, interior and all, i have all the equipment that i need and i might even get to use a paint booth, but probably not, he doesnt want a show job, just a tough paint job, which type of paint should i use, how many coats, which type of primer, i have to learn sometime so i fugure it should be on his jeep and not my truck when its ready, any advice, steps, etc will be appreciated, thanks, sean

sand it to bare metal, use a self-etching primer/surfacer which is sandable. Urethane paint is pretty tough, I put 3 coats of single pass urethane on an 83 Peterbilt I used to own and it looked very nice until the moron I sold it to used a razor blade to cut off the signs from the doors. This paint won't get rock hard, like enamel, but stays somewhat soft, on a hot day, you can press your fingernail into it and leave an impression, but it will smooth back out. It's pretty resistant to rock chips and will flex with the body.

I think you'd like a single-stage urethane. It will get hard, stay glossy, and isn't too expensive.

Ben, it is a bad old pantjob, i am strting out with the interoir first and the xteroir will b ein a couple of months, i am also painting his roll bars and hurculining his "bed", thanks for the help guys

Sand it down to the factory primer with 80 grit. If there is rock chips or rust pits it may be a good idea to take all they way down to the metal using 80 grit. Then give it a couple of coats of epoxy primer. Sand the primer useing 120 to 240 to 600 grit paper.
Wipe it all down with wax and grease remover and a tack cloth and then paint. Since the quality of the paint job doesn't seem to be important I agree with cali_surfer about the single stage urethane.

Take off that Von Dutch hat before i stab you with a 000 Mack.
