DAMN grant wheel install!

howdy partners...im in the middle of installing my woodgrain grant wheel on my van tilt in the 67, and im getting hung up on the horn plunger, it says to discard the old one so i did now the brass piece that makes contact isnt long enough it seems....and i need the white plastic bushing in there so it keeps it off the metal sleeve it slides in..so what gives? who here has done this before? i dont want to just slap the wheel on, it would be nice to have a horn too...also my install kit didnt have a spacer..it shows that as the first thing that slides onto the splined shaft...maybe the instructions are universal or something i dont know...but do i need that spacer to begin with and also how do i get my brass plunger to make contact with the piece below it? any pointers would be great, thanks guys

Awww man, I wish I could help, same wheel different column...I forgot you had that van tilt, cuz at first I was like
"damn mine was easy, took like 5 minutes, whats he talkin' bout?!?"

then I remembered van van van...good luck man, hope thats the last part to complete it

I wish I could figure that out. When I installed my Grant horn, it was killing my battery so I finally diconnected it. Last night my horn cap flew off when I hit a pot hole. Scared the hell out of me,lol. barn9 should be here shortly to share his thoughts on Grant,LOL.

you have to use that little spacer coller first..
then i had to use adifferent plastic horn adaptor the one that has the wire coming out....

so spacer ,plastic horn adaptor,spring,alum wheel mount w/splines, then the metal cone the the wheel mount's to, nut.,
it's a lot of fun compressing the spring and lining up the mark's and getting it set...

i boungt a alum, wheel that was much more user freindly..
than the painted models...

FUK..i have to wait until next wednesday to get a new kit...all because they didnt give me a damn spacer...grrr this is a major piss off, i wanted to drive it out on the driveway and take a pic of it with my dads 73 shovelhead he just got today...ill post some pics tomorrow...the bike is just awesome...

I have run several of those Grant wheels, & really havent had any issues on the horn.....the old style (originally superior), there were issues. You would hit a pot hole in the road, & the chrome button & spring would "fly out" , & your best girlfreind(at that time ) would have to hold the contact plate off the wheel , while you got under the hood & disconnected that damn horn! most of the problems that I have seen with a grant wheel install, have been due to a pinched wire (done that), or bad contacts one 30+ yr old parts. It has been so long that I can't remember what the issue was with mine, But I had the same problem until I realized one day while trying to get the horn to work that I had something completely backwards. After I turned it around, it solved all my problems. But this was 7 years ago. so, all I can suggest is if there is anything that looks like it can be turned around but doesnt seem to make sense. try it.. Good luck..

I had that problem with my last steering wheel. When I put the new one in this truck I junked all the horn wiring hook ups and put it on it's own button under the dash and put a slightly harder crimp (not noticeable) on the horn cap so it won't be as likely to fly off. I also taped the spring to the cap so it's alot easier to put on without fighting the spring and cap at the same time.
