New Member needs help

Hi Im new to the board and could use a little help Buying a 1970 -72 Chevy pick up. There are a few for sale in my area and I need to know what to look out for. what are the real serious issues ? what motor it the best . where are the worst areas for rust.

below are some of the trucks for sale in my area ( bear in mind candian dollars = .66 usd)

72 CHEVROLET PU, 250 straight, 4 spd, gd shape $1200

69 GMC <1/2>T LB, 305, auto, ps, pwr disc brks, AirCared, runs grt, must be seen $3000 obo.

70 GMC <3/4>T, camper spec Fleetside, 350 auto, passed AirCare $2500 obo

70 GMC 3/4T, custom camper, V8, auto, AirCared, new paint, uphostery, battery, tires, excellent condition, 99% original truck, $4500

areas of rust

windshield area, rockers, cab corners and floor, up under the vents in the dimmer switch area, battery tray and under. windshield and vent area are very hard to fix. sure u will recieve a lot more info on this.

Depends on your budget, the '69 sounds like it might be a good deal. Rockers and cab corners are the most common rust areas, but are repairable with some effort. Those other areas that mudder mentioned are a real pain, and require a lot of patience and skill to repair. Take your time and look until you find a deal that your sure about, good luck!

Welcome from Colorado. I'd say it depends on what you want the truck for. The '69 sounds like the best deal, but if you're planning on hauling anything heavy, or towing, I'd go with one of the '70s. Don't have any advice on the rust, since I haven't started my rustoration yet, but one area would be the bed floor, since I'm having problems finding a whole floor without buying an entire bed to take it from.

thanks for the warm welcome and wow that was a some quick responses. The last chevy I had was and 86 Jimmy about 7 years ago, I really want to get into a more classic vehichle and I love the look of the pre 72 chevy trucks. Im not much of a mechanic but I dont mind getting my hands a little dirty. I was told by a freind that you really have to watch for rust on the cab corners / Cab mounts espessially in the rear. I assume by cab corners this refers to the section that the cab attaches to the cab mounts, mabey someone could clear this up for me.

What are your opinions on motor choices?

What Im really looking for is somthing as stock as possible, I really like the classic look. Im not concerned about power but more about reliablity. I would prefer a standared but could live with an Automatic. Thanks again for the help

As for the 250 six I think that they are very good motors if you don't need lots of power. The weak spot is the head if the motor gets hot it will crack good luck to you. And watch for rust.

If that GMC has a 305 V-6, it'll run forever. Parts are kinda hard to find for it though. Check out this link if you want to learn more on the V-6 That GMC made. http://www.favorites.com/~jolly/305V6.htm

Here in Saskatoon there is a 67 GMC 3/4 ton 283 Powerglide power steering with original paint that has never seen snow and is almost mint with the exception of a very minor dent on the pass side of the box for 7 grand. Sounds like alot but you couldn't do that kind of bodywork for 7 grand let alone get a perfect 283 and mint original interior.

Im actually from saskatoon and will be back there this summer, who knows mabey ill still be in the market. thanks for the tip

I saw this ad today

What do you think about the low compression on a rebuilt engine?
