So your truck blows the theory of only automatic chokes coming with the stove pipe. Hmmm... another options mystery on 67-72 trucks. Who would’ve thought?

Bottom line, do what ever floats your boat.
I'm dumping that old school stuff for an LS motor. Twice the horse power same gas mileage. If you need that heat shield I might have it. But I pulled all that stuff like a year ago |

Actually, that comment was not meant to be sarcastic at all. I firmly believe, at least in my 55 years of car ownership, the new stuff is FAR more reliable than this old school stuff. My 69 truck has a much thicker folder of warranty and repair receipts than any of the 35 new/newer vehicles I've bought since. My 2015 Silverado Duramax with 35,000 plus miles has yet to be in for any repair. The 2006 Duramax which I sold with more miles than my 69 (123,000 vs. 119,000) was only in 3 or 4 times. The folder on the 69 is an inch thick.

That second engine picture posted in the original post is my truck. It's a 68 with a manual four speed. From what I've seen, automatic transmission trucks were more likely to have stove pipes and manuals were more likely to have smog pumps. I think 3/4 ton's and higher were exempt from more strict smog controls at the time.
Other rules would apply for other years and of course California rules of the time would apply too. I see someone else has an orange alternator bracket on their '68. That's a whole other mystery for the '68's!

Looking again at the 68 picture with a heat riser, it looks like there is a dip-stick for the tranny. CORRECTION, its the throttle linkage. I can't tell if its an automatic or not.
