Re: Vibration @ 50 mph

I've smoothed out hundreds of grooves in backing plates where the shoes rubbed in the years I was doing brake jobs. I did most of them with a file then as I didn't have access to a grinder. I'd use a flap wheel now.

Following behind someone else's brake job can always be a challenge as you are always having to check and see what they might have done wrong. Springs in the wrong place or missing, contaminated lining, shoes on backwards as far as primary/secondary go. The shoe with the least lining always goes in front, the one with the most always goes in back and some budget lining came with two different compositions that were marked primary and secondary. kind of like a tan lining and a gray lining.

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Re: Vibration @ 50 mph

Where does the return spring for the parking brake linkage go on a 54-3100 ?
I don't see it in the book. On the cross-frame bar ?
Thanks

Well, as maybe suspected .... both primary shoes were on one side, and both secondary on the other. Landing pads are pretty groovy and the contamination from the rear was a bit worse than initially observed.
New seals and shoes on the wayyyyyyyy.

Now the return springs ... pri and sec look identical, same color (blue), same wire gauge and all. Were they the same on these models ? I saw no mention in the shop manual of them being different.
Thanks again.

Rear axle seal installation

Also, I think the axle seals were installed backwards.
It had the dual lip leather CR seals with the springs to the dry side.
I always thought that the springs go to the wet side.
Which is correct ?
And I'm still trying to determine where the return spring for the parking brake goes ..... anyone have an original setup to help ?
Thanks.
