Transmission question

I have gone through 2 " bulletproof" th350's in the past year ( built with redline clutches and hardened sprags etc" and am finally going through the 3'rd one this week - I brought it in to the trans shop for a new build and can't figure out what to do... Should I have him build me a 4l60E and be done with it ( 1700.00 ) or should I wait for a 400 case ( 1200.00 ) to come available? I have a 900$ credit for the th350 coming because it has come apart 3 times - 500+- hp at the crank kills it?

I would recommend if you are going to go with a 4L60E then why not go with a 4L80E tranny as that will be able to handle the hp your engine is pushing. Otherwise I would recommend a T56 6 speed Manual!!

500 horses in front of a TH350? I'm no expert, but that does sound a bit excessive.

The 4L60E is just a Turbo 350 with an overdrive basically. Actually its the newer version of the 700R4 but with electronics. You will need a stand alone computer to run the trans also. You will need other things like shortened driveshaft, throttle cable to the carb, etc.. Wait for a Turbo 400.

I would agree with the 4L80-E. If you have that much HP and beat on it like it sounds you do. The 4L80 will handle it. It's like a TH-400 with O/D. You will need to have some other work done. Mostly computer,and D/S. You shouldn't be able to kill it though. It would be worth the money for you I think.

thanks, I actually went to the trans guy today and we settled on the 4l80e with a stand alone for the lock up 4th. - with kevlar clutches hardened sprag and vette servos and some othe cool goodies brought it back up to 1900.00 - it should be a sweet setup! - especially since I am going to tear it out and stick it in the 70 SS nova I found - I hope to pull wheelies!!

I run a turbo 350 that I rebuilt with a b&m kit in my 69 Camaro. Stock body/interior.
On motor 11.30's... juice 10.60's... Has a 5,500 stall. Got the biggest trans cooler I could find and an extra deep pan. Shift at 7,000rpm at the strip. 535hp+/-

Anyway, overdrive would be a big plus. Save your money and get a computer operated trans.

Does that price include the stand alone computer?

Yeah, it covers removal of the old trans, and installation of the new trans and he is going to wire it up with the lock up kit from TCI.

Just a thought, if it only needs a lock-up kit, then it might not be a 4L80E. Could be just a 4L80. the 4L80E NEEDS a computer to work, not just something to tell it when to lock in 4th gear. Make sure he isn't selling you a 700-R4 for way more than it's worth.

I thought all the 4l80 and 60's were elctronic and needed a computer for them. TCI sells a built and modified 700R4 to handle 700HP and I beleive the price was around $1400. I do hear the 4l80's can handle more power, when I was looking for an OD unit I looked at both the 700R4 and the 4L80 the 4l80 at that time was a couple hundred more and the computer is what killed the deal because at that time it was almost as expensive as the trans was. I don't run my truck at the dragstrip but I do beat on it a bit and my engine is no slouch either and the trans with a lockup in 4th gear has held up well.
