T-221 pto

NOTE: This is NOT a WTB Thread!

I am curious as to who has a PTO mounted on their T-221 and what use you have put it to. I have considered trying to acquire one--mostly for the bragging rights ()--but possibly to make use of for, say, a winch. Is it even possible to find these things out there? Has anyone bought one recently? If so, for how much? Any suggestions as to where to look?

If I get any positive information at all, I *might* pay up and put up a WTB thread in the right place. For now, I will not even respond to any surreptitious offers as I want to be above-board and honest. I am on a fact-finding mission, not an acquisition mission. If and when that changes, I will do my duty.

Google "Chelsea,Dana" power take off systems and see what you get.
Back in the 70's,I built pto's for trucks/work bodies.
There are a million choices and applications so a cost is really hard to figure until you know exactly what you need.

I've been around chevy 4x4s along time, SM 420s with 221s and 465s 205s. Between my son and I we have 4 or 5 T221 trucks right now with 2 or 3 spares, I've sold 3 or 4 trucks in the past that had T221s. Yet I have never seen a 221 case with a single or 2 way PTO on it, a couple I put ramsey winchs on I had to find 2 way PTOs to fit the SM 420s. I have four trucks with T223s in them and only one has a PTO. All I have is a 1964 brochure that has a drawing of a running gear and it shows a PTO on the T221. Sorry to be the grim reaper, good luck on your search and keep us posted.

That does sound grim.

If it's no trouble, could you scan that brochure and post it?

I can find the brochure but our copier hasn't worked for so long it will be easier to run the brochure to Walgreens and scan onto a flashdrive, might take couple days. I've been watching for that PTO for about 48 years, if I would have found one I would still be sleeping with it under my pillow.

No need to go to all that work, Peanutbutter! I'd like to see it, but it's worth making you do all that running.

years back I purchased a 59 gov truck with a 420 in the back. After cleaning out all the trash I discovered it had a pto on the side. No yoke, just a shaft towards the front.

Planned on using it on the farm truck but not sure what other drive setups might be useful other than just a winch.

What are the ratings on the 420 PTO?

Any pics of PTO setups would be GREAT!!!!!

Hope no one minds if I hijack the thread but there obviously is some experience here. I have a project with a SM 420 with a NP 205 and a PTO winch on the front bumper that is not hooked to anything. The question is what would be the better unit to drive the PTO, the 420 or the 205?

Ask away! I'm always up for more info. I would think that, if the PTO is driven from the final gearing of the xfer case, then using it would be superior since it can be run off the lower gear if needed. but that is pure supposition on my part.

PTO's for the NP205 would be cheeper and easier to locate I think.
I have had several for 205's and only one forward and reverse for the SM420.
The one on the 205 needs only be one way because the transmission can be used for forward or reverse.
