Wheel bearing dust cap
Ok, this seems like a dumb question, but how do you get these back on? I just replaced my wheel bearings and went to put on my two shiny new ones. I tried and tried to get it on with my rubber mallet and only succeeded in denting it up. It went cockeyed every time I hit it. I assume there is some simple trick I am missing. It should not be this hard. Thanks for the help.

Re: Wheel bearing dust cap
Take one of your dust caps to the hardware store and find a piece of pvc pipe that will fit over the cap and use that to drive the cap on. That's what I used and it worked well.

Re: Wheel bearing dust cap
I have used a drift/punch tool and went around the circumference of the lip and walked it in.

Re: Wheel bearing dust cap
I have been traveling and very busy, but I finally got this done today. I found a coupling for ridged conduit that fit perfectly over the dust cap. I still had trouble getting it in straight so I borrowed a bearing race installer over the fitting and it worked perfectly.

Re: Wheel bearing dust cap
A stock one would have been made better. I bought a disc brake upgrade kit which had shipping damage, and had to buy replacements at the local NAPA. Those things were a blue steel ***** to install. I never had a problem with stock stuff, back in the day.

My stock ones fit perfectly snug. Tap right in. Like most everything else these days, you can blame that slightly different foreign standard...
