Where is the partial VIN on my 1971 Blazer engine block
Hey, my engine pad only has V0122TBG stamped on it, which I was able to find that TBG = 1971 350ci "Conveab" (not sure what that means), AT, 255hp, for a K-10 to 2500.
My question is, some websites say that the partial VIN (making it "matching numbers") was moved around in different years. Does anyone have a 71 Blazer that they can point me to a detailed specific location, ideally with pictures? Mine is going in for rebuild and it's caked in grease, any detailed area to look would be great. Thank you |

Trucks did not get stamped with a partial vin like the passenger cars did. The engine only has the assembly date stamped on the pad which you have already discovered.

Re: Where is the partial VIN on my 1971 Blazer engine block
To add a little more..Although there is no way to be certain that the engine is original one thing to look at is the assembly date of the engine vs. the build date of the truck. Generally they are within a few weeks of each other. For example the 71 Blazer I am working on now which I am certain has the original engine was assembled 8/70 with an engine that was assembled on 7/30/70. TBG is the correct code for a 1971 350 w/AT

Re: Where is the partial VIN on my 1971 Blazer engine block
Thanks for all the info guys! I yanked the drivetrain and the trans/tcase have been rebuilt professionally, and waiting to be installed again... fast turn around from the shop, they had it only three days! The engine is getting rebuilt currently. I'll be doing a write up soon on putting in an 87 Blazer fuel tank (baffled) to run EFI in it, does anyone know if there's a good write up already? I didn't see one in my hasty search. Also, the 87 sending unit says its 95ohms and ours is 90ohms (right?) does that 5ohm difference jack with the fuel gauge at all?
I'm going to have to power wash the several inches of caked grease/dirt in the engine bay while the drivetrain is out, any suggestions on how to get it off besides scraping and power washing? I'll get some better pics of the truck as I go along with it too! |

Re: Where is the partial VIN on my 1971 Blazer engine block
If you want to preserve the engine code on the block ask the machine shop to forgo decking the block if possible or the code will be gone.
Pressure wash and oven cleaner to tackle the grease. Any chance you want to sell the neck from the original fuel tank? I'll take it if so or could trade some blazer parts. Are the tow hooks still there?
