Restrictions on what color you could order?

Never been something I paid too much attention to here on the board. So this may have been answered a dozen times. Didn't find what I wanted via the google search button for the board.

Generally speaking it looks to me like you could order any color that was available for the year truck you were purchasing new, possibly however you wanted it. Obvious statement, but could you order any color combo for any trim option?

On a Cheyenne Super did it have to be two toned? Did it have to be one of the fancier colors, like a metallic?

Could you order a metallic color for a base model truck?

I remember when my dad was selling cars they got to order their own demo vehicles in pretty much any combo they wanted (I don't think they were allowed the higher performance engines though). We had a purple 69 road runner with black vinyl top and a white interior. It was short lived in our hands because someone quickly sold it.

I think you could order any color or combo on any trim level. It would be interesting to see the oddest combo. The strangest exterior/interior combo I’ve seen was a hugger orange with green interior

If you knew the right people, you could order pretty much what you wanted. Those people would potentially only be in the corporate office.

Re: Restrictions on what color you could order?

There was a blue with red interior posted on here years ago. Back then things were done manually and special orders from the dealer came in on paper not computers. So once the factory received the paper order it was just a matter of inputting the RPO codes into the system. If there was some kind of mechanical restriction for instance if you wanted the O/Drive feature with an automatic transmission then it wouldn't get built. Paint and trim were easy to order. I worked at Chrysler dealers from 75/2000 and that is the way Chrysler did it so GM .Ford etc must have had similar systems and we were still doing paper orders till 94/95..

Re: Restrictions on what color you could order?

There was at least one truck on the board here that was ordered with Cadillac colors. And fleet colors were pretty wide selection. The old Burlington Northern railroad had a particular green color on their locomotives and their trucks matched. I don't know if they ordered them or did the paint in house, but I would bet they ordered them.

Yup. There are fleet and government colors that could be ordered. Even Mary Kay(TM) can order pink vehicles. Though it is called "light red".

Re: Restrictions on what color you could order?

If it wasn't an offered standard color for the year and series of truck, it should have received a "Special Paint" RPO. These have always interested me. My assumption is that you could order any GM color for that year (i.e. available on another series truck (like medium duty trucks, for example) - or a car, panel van, etc etc or other GM line like a Caddy, etc) - and I always like trying to figure out what the Special Paint RPO meant for the specific truck. There are also Special Paint RPOs for two tones that weren't optional combos for the year. Here's one that always made me wonder:

Sorry, missed a couple of your original questions - most answered already I believe.

Re: Restrictions on what color you could order?

I had a 1954 chevy sedan delivery, it apparently had belonged to the road commission when new. I bought this vehicle back in the 70's, still know where its at. It was what I call county orange and the paint code on this vehicle says SPECIAL in big letters. I'm sure the county ordered vehicles by the truck load as most of them was this color and still are.
