2 piece driveshaft
Where is the slip joint supposed to be on a 67 lwb 2wd with trailing arm suspension. On my truck the only slip joint is the yoke that goes into the transmission. the rear section is solid. with the carrier bearing in the front section there should be no real movement for the front driveshaft.

Re: 2 piece driveshaft
He said trailing arm suspension in his first post. That would be coil springs....

Re: 2 piece driveshaft
C10's with coil springs didn't come with a slip joint in either drive shaft. The fore and aft movement is taken up at the tranny yoke. The rubber mount in the carrier bearing allows the bearing to move as needed. C20's and the leaf spring trucks (and possibly some C10's with HD coil spring suspension) have slip joints in the aft drive shaft as well as a different style of carrier bearing.

Re: 2 piece driveshaft
I don't want to hijack the tread but....
Do you know if the movement at the slip yoke is less than or the same as it would be on a one piece drive shaft? I am considering a 5.3/6L80 swap but the 6L80 is a 4x4 tranny. A camaro tailpiece will bolt in place of the transfer case but the splines on the output shaft are shorter than a standard 2wd driveshaft so there isn't as much room for the slip as there is in a 2wd. The full conversion from a 4wd to 2wd requires a full disassembly of the transmission to change out the shaft which is kind of pricey. Chris

Re: 2 piece driveshaft
I believe with one piece driveshaft the only slip yoke was into the transmission. I thought I read somewhere if you are just swapping out the tail housing off a 4x4 with out changing the output shaft it would be better to keep the 2 piece drive shaft. I am doing a 6.0/4l80e swap right now also I think because mine is a long bed it might be easier to keep the 2 piece driveshaft. I did get a 2wd 4l80e though

Re: 2 piece driveshaft
This is how coil spring trucks and 60s impalas were built.
This design is very sensitive to people working on the driveshaft without having it rebalanced. Changing a ujoint will most likely create a vibration that will break the carrier bearing mount. Best advice, leave it alone or have a pro rebuild the whole shaft. |

Re: 2 piece driveshaft
My 71 1/2 ton c 10 with 6.0 & 4L80E one piece drive shaft has been a good swap. The yoke going into the transmission is the only place it slides back and forth.

Re: 2 piece driveshaft
Yes it's a LWB truck. 3 years worth and it hasn't had any issues. I had it built by a drive shaft shop though.

Re: 2 piece driveshaft
I thought the 2 piece driveshaft were only used on lwb versions due to the length of a one piece drive shaft being a problem...whipping issues. I could be wrong.
