Putting a 700R4 in a 68 what column do I need?
Hello,
I want to put a 700R4 trans in my 68 C10, that has a 350 in it. Currently has a turbo 400 trans. Looking for some information on doing it and what steering column did you use? Since my is a 3 speed column. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks |

Re: Putting a 700R4 in a 68 what column do I need?
I did the same swap on mine. Just changed the 3 on the tree column for a used auto column I found for sale. I had to get a new crossmember for the the tranny, and shift linkage. For the crossmemeber I went with ISF fab it was a good price and I was happy with it. With the shift linkage I went with Lokar. I would recommend buying stuff for your 700R4 from bowtieoverdrives.com. Those guys are great, just tell them what your plan is and they'll point you in the right direction for parts for the TV cable and plate ect. You will also probably need to get the drive shaft shortened, they have a diagram on their website that shows you how to correctly measure for the cut.

Your stock colum will work with no issues , there may be some adjustments to make on the linkage ,so the gear indicater pointer stays within the parimeter of the indicater parameters ends
Also your original plastic indicater lense will have to be changed (if you want ) to accomadate the overdrive gear (4th gear) you can by one from Classic Parts of America, this is the only place I found them , reading P,R,N 1,2,3,Drive. had to do a little bit of sanding to get a perfect fit so the indicater frame work witch houses the needle and lense fits perfectly . its a pretty easy task to do |

I had the 700 in a chevelle. I had the adjustment so you could get 2-4th, honestly I didn't want to get first gear because its so low that it would have blown the engine before I could shift.

Re: Putting a 700R4 in a 68 what column do I need?
The column you have should be fine. Simply adjust it so that "OD" is "D" on your lever. If you don't want OD, just pull it into "L2", which is now "D" with that trans. I had a '68 Skylark with a ST300 (other brand's version of the Powerglide) that I ran for many years after I swapped in a 305 Chevy with a 700 (4R) trans. drove it over 40k miles before I sold the car, but not because the trans failed.

That's what I thought I read too, but just looked it over and he has a 400 Transmission on it.

For the money your going to spend on rebuilding the 700R4 plus setting up the shifting patterns.I rather buy the 4L80E Buy the TCI harness and be done with it.better trans for towing hot dogging and mileage.
