Stepside Fender Replacement
I am redoing my stepside fenders and box. I built new flanges and will be remounting the fenders but wondering if I should use some body goo between the fenders and the box. It looks like the factory put some in there when the fenders were originally mounted. Anybody know what this stuff was and if there is a better alternative today?

I used fender welting and glued it to the fenders with 3M trim adhesive. Before installing I applied Vulkem sealant to the welting. Seam does not leak but it may be difficult to remove the fender later on.

Where did you get the welting, 3M adhesive and Vulkem products?

The fender welts can be bought from most venders. The 3m adhesive can be gotten from most auto parts stores.

Vulkem is used a lot for sealing roof seams so it is good outside. It has been around for a long time and holds up well. It comes in tubes that fit caulk guns
and it is available in black and other colors. It cures to a rubber like state and stays flexible. It can be painted. It makes a very good seam sealer for applications like floor seams or weld seams where appearance is not an issue. I get mine through the local roof supplies dealers. I am sure there are others but I have used this product for years and it holds up very well under outside weather conditions. If you have a problem locating it contact the manufacturer, Tremco Inc. 3735 Green Road Beechwood, Ohio 44122 Telephone number 216 292-5000 In Canada the number is: 416 421-3300 Jim |

The factory used a putty type material between the fender flange and bedside. 3M makes a very similar product which I used on my restoration and works great. It s called 3M Strip Calk and is available at body shop supply stores. Check it out.

The welting that I bought from LMC is better than nothing but I really don't like the way it looks. It's just vinyl folded in half and sewed. I would try the putty type.

Thanks guys! I have been welding new flanges on all day. It is a real pain to have to cut fit every new section of flange...these were bad but they will be good as new once I am done. Jim Walker...I am guessing the thick inner flange was spot welded to the fender skin flange. Yours must have been in excellent shape...you lucky dog! This one fender will take me at least two days!

Hey you should have seen mine when I first mounted them on the truck they were BRAND NEW! The PO had stored them in a barn since 1970 (he put toolboxes on) and they still had the putty sealer on them. Unfortunately they are the only straight panels on the whole truck.
