Re: 'Betty Jane' 72 Survivor
Brad, What a great truck! You made a great find and the lack of rust really makes it special. Betty Jane sure is going to be pretty when you get the detail work done. Can't wait to see her. Here is the pricing I said I would work up for her.
1972 C10 CS10934 = $2716.90 A28 = $51.00 Window, sliding rear D89 = $13.00 Stripe, body side paint G50 = $18.00 Rear Coil Spring, capacity 2000lb each H01 = $12.00 3:07 gear, w/ 3or4 speed manual P01 = $26.00 Wheel covers, w/o YE9 U63 = $67.00 Radio, AM V43 = $49.00 Rear Step Bumper V46 = $15.00 Chrome Front Bumper Z53 = $12.00 Guages, Amp, Temp, Oil Total = $2979.90 Plus State and local taxes, license fees, Dealer prep, handling fees, accessories etc. $2979.90 is roughly $18,000. today. Hopefully I can come up and see her soon. TTYL, Bruce

Very cool truck man. I think were i in your shoes, I'd drive the crap out of it while my 67 was under the knife.

Re: 'Betty Jane' 72 Survivor
My advice, just leave it alone. Made it 46 years in solid original condition. Something I really enjoy doing on originals like this : while keeping her drivable all the time take a weekend here in there and restore each working component to as new. Carefully preserve- clean - renew all the original finishes and soft pieces. It's really a joy to drive something as it would've been back in the day with all the components working properly, engine in a perfect state of tune, column shift greased and adjusted properly, tight front end etc....By '72 these base trucks drive like a dream when everything is operating as it should. Your truck has great soul, if you're thinking about modifying it, just sell it, plenty of dime a dozen long beds to turn into anything you want........
Enjoy her, she's a good one! Steve weim55 Colorado |

Re: 'Betty Jane' 72 Survivor
Wow that's nice, what a farm-fresh truck. I can't believe you found this, the seller must have been swamped with inquiries if he listed it. Did you just come across it and make an offer? It seems like the color in particular is rare: nowadays every other new vehicle is black, but back then everything was yellow, green and orange. I wonder if anyone knows the approximate number made in comparison to other colors.
I wouldn't change much except the bumpers (both, in white) and the wheels. Although I like the PO1s that it came with, in my opinion they seem to look better on 67-68s than 71-72s. I'd go with white steelies and period dog dishes: I can't tell what era those ones that are one it are from, but they seem to go well. I wouldn't paint it, but it would be tempting if you did to give it a two-tone look with a white roof. Personally I would just lightly buff it and seek expert opinion on how to preserve that patina. That said, I only offer my opinion because you asked, its your truck and you should enjoy it any way you like!

Re: 'Betty Jane' 72 Survivor
I just noticed that the SPID says it came with a chrome bumper, so on second thought I guess I wouldn't go with white. That's an interesting option: the original buyer wanted a base model but couldn't resist adding a little bling to his new purchase, along with the paint stripe. It also means that whatever bumper you go with in the rear, you will probably choose chrome too, I am guessing.

Re: 'Betty Jane' 72 Survivor
IF, IF it was mine....
I'd try to stop all that surface rust, even if your new black paint doesn't match perfect, it will be hardly noticeable being black. Make sure all mechanical things are in working order. Re-pack front wheel bearings, machine rotors and install new semi-metallic brake pads. Suck the old brake fluid brake fluid out of m/cyl, then bleed front and rear brakes, purging them of old cruddy fluid... Check rear end, maybe change oil in it... Best thing being a 71 or 72 is having disc brakes, no conversion needed. I plan to install manual disc brakes on my 67 and 68, wondering how the brake pedal effort will be when I do that. I'm guessing that the 3.07 gear ratio was an option, I'd guess that the 3.73 would be standard for a 6 cyl... My ONLY change would be a small block 400 and TH350 trans...maybe.... keep driving it!!! Major congrats!!! |
