My 68 SWB driver/project.

I recently picked this truck up after years of having projects and never having a truck to drive.
Plans are to pain the roof white, fix some body work and spot paint, go through suspension and get it around 2" lower and drive it!
Also, having a really hard time keeping a turbo LS out of it, so we'll see how that goes too...

Very nice truck. I couldn't agree more with keeping it on the road as you do updates. Sometimes it's hard to stay motivated when you tear one down and do a full resto and not be able to enjoy it for months or sometimes years.

Right now it has springs someone heated. So I plan to do a 2.5" spindle and 2, or 3" spring and either a 4" rear spring with 2" block or a 6" spring. not sure yet.
Ill make my own adjustable track bar, probably relocate it under the pass side arm or in that area while Im in there as well.
Id really like to go 5 or 6/7 but I dont feel like notching the frame yet.

Thank you everyone. This is one of my favorite colors on these trucks!

I dont have a lot of time to make it a project with my other "project" never being done! lol

Re: My 68 SWB driver/project.

One of the things on my "must have" list for this truck was a white roof.
I had figured id scuff and paint it one day, but realized, that the cab was originally white, and it was only scuffed and painted.
I started to sand the green a bit to see where that got me and in cleaning up realzed that acetone would take whatever they used to paint the green right off.
A box of rags and half gallon of acetone later, I got my white roof.
Not perfect by any means but I think it matches the rest of the truck pretty well for a couple hours of work!

I like it. Is it blue or the 503 green?

503.
Its REALLY hard to take a pic of it that actually looks like it does in person lol. My fiance went as far as to start a facebook poll to argue the truck was blue not green.

Re: My 68 SWB driver/project.

I figured it was 503 because of the green dash pad. It's a great color but it does funny things in pictures for some reason. My jimmy will be 503 (one fine day!)

Good luck, Rg

Re: My 68 SWB driver/project.

Well this thread is in desperate need of an update.
Since my last update I had done some engine work on the truck, then decided to finally bring it into the shop to get some new suspension that it desperately needed.
I had also put a better set of cylinder heads on it which made a big difference, but I soon realized that there was no longer enough cam for the heads. So apart it came!

I have always been a drag race kinda guy and love the style. I do want to get back into racing a bit as well so I decided we might as well go for it.

I got a Lunati street solid roller cam, Comp Endure-X solid roller lifters, Jesel belt drive, Comp Pro Magnum rockers, girdles, professional products hurricane intake and some other goodies and got to work on the engine.

In the meantime I ordered a set of CPP 2.5" spindles, 3" springs, 5" rear springs, 2" block, panhard bar and relocation kit, etc.

While I was doing the front suspension I installed a set of Wilwood D52 bolt on replacement dual piston calipers. Knowing I wouldnt have enough vacuum for a brake booster I also installed a Wilwood 7/8" bore master with an adjustable prop valve and line lock.

It turned out that whoever owned this truck prior swapped a complete 73+ crossmember into it to do the 5 lug swap and I had a very hard time finding headers with large primaries and clearance for angle plugs to fit so I did some research and found Schoenfeld. They offered a fenderwell header for squarebody trucks, and listed 67-72 C20. I called them to clarify and they said they didnt list 67-72 C10 because they had never used them on one so they didnt want to list it in their application so they hooked me up and I got a set coming. I have to tell you guys, I love these headers.

I also decided to bite the bullet and order some real wheels. Weld RT-71, black, in 15x4.5 and 15x12. Im so happy with these as well.
Right now it has 27x4.5x15 hoosier front runners and 315/60 MT ET street radials.
It also turned out that the rear in the truck came from a 71-72 so the tires JUST fit. I need to find an early rear or build another to get it a bit narrower in case I want to run a little wider tire.

So that sums it up for the most part. I will try and keep up a little better!

OH! and somewhere in there the wife decided she wanted a truck so we found her a 70 shortbed stepside. Hers got a 5/6" drop and some 20" Ridler wheels.

That's a nice pair of trucks! I like the visual transformation of the 68 too. Looks aggressive, just like it should!
