Help! 67 Power steering problem - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I went for a drive today in my 67 C10 CST and when I stopped to back into my Grandfathers driveway I heard a bang and my power steering went away. I figured I threw a belt but went I looked under the truck I got a nasty surprise. The last owner fabricated the power assist ram bracket and some how the bracket tore a big chunk out of the frame where he bolted it in. This caused the end of the ram to brake off. Now I have a ram with the end broken off and the area where the bracket bolts to the frame is destroyed. The truck is not stock so I can convert it over to a newer PS system but have no idea what it would cost. I guess I could repair the frame and try to locate a correct bracket and get a new ram as well. What do you truck experts think would be the best plan. My main concern is safety. My wife sometimes drives this truck and I am scared to think of what would have happened if it let loose at 55 MPH on a curve with her driving it. Thanks Steve

Well converting to a modern PS setup is easy. In fact (don't hold me to it) there may be interest from members of this board to purchase the remaing good parts of your PS setup. I don't think they were too common. There has been lots of discussion about the conversion on this board so if the search engine is functioning you should be able to get the info you need. One watch out on the 67 is the frame. Depending if it was an early or late 67 the frame may or may not have the proper indentation on the frame for the larger PS box. If it does it is a straight bolt up and parts are cheap. The part that really sucks for you is the frame damage. A talented fabricator / welder should be able to fix it nicely though.

I called a parts vender today about purchasing a power steering component kit to change over to a modern style ps set up. It is 375.00 for the box, pump and hoses. That seems like a OK price. He said I would need a different shaft from the steering column to the box which was 89.00. That seemed OK as well. Then he said I would need a new steering column also which is 425.00. I do not think that is right is it? If I get a new shaft would I need a new column also?

Come on! I changed mine over for about $50 worth of parts from a junk yard. Steering column and shaft was fine on mine and "should" be on yours also. The power steering box fits full size pickups into the 1980's (later ones had metric hose fitings though).

i put the new style power steering on my 68. everything bolted right up. you will have to notch your drivers side bumper bracket to fit the new box in. make sure that you have the right brackets to mount the pump or you will have belt allignment problems
