brake booster question

Still running manual brakes on my 71 and want to add a booster. I found a used one that im about to go buy.

Do the brake lines have to be extended or remade with the extra length to get the booster on there?

I'm in the middle of rebuilding the brakes on my '71.. It came from the factory with manual brakes.. I'm replacing rotors, drums, calipers, wheel cylinders, pads, shoes, springs and misc. hardware, etc.. I'm converting to power brakes with the addition of a kit I got from Summit..

I had to "massage" the lines going to the proportioning valve but the existing lines will fit.. BTW.. I shopped several sources.. Summit has the best price $159.99 and free shipping.. This beats ALL others by as much as $100..

I added a new booster. Bendix style from O’Reillys and a bracket I bought on the line. I feel like it’s too eager to brake. 1” movement and it comes to a complete stop.

Is this normal?

Not sure if it's normal, but question... Can you provide part numbers for what you added, and where you got the brackets? I have a '72 factory manual brakes, and would like to add a booster. Can you do this without even disconnecting any brake lines?

I don’t think the Delco style booster will work with that bracket

I think all the factory line will attach being further away from the wall.I know money is a little tight But safety Is not to be taken lightly.Uses power brake units can be a hassle an Dangerous.For 160.00 you can get a remand one and get the bigger one.The single diaphragm i like the 8 inch double diaphragm booster more braking pressure the 4 inch one is a single.In today's times.I like full on power.An the master i use is off the 3/4 tons.They seem to last longer and have more fluid holding capability.Put there just plain bigger.Here is pics of my 1972 3/4 ton with all the peaces.Please paint your new booster Or it will rust

even when i put power brakes on my 1965 i went with the bigger one and man it made the brakes come alive

The bracket you used is the same one that came with my "kit".. However, I couldn't use that stock single diaphragm booster with that bracket, as it interfered with hood closure..

The bracket linkage increases the amount of rod travel at the booster in relation to a given amount of pedal travel.. Couple this feature with the fact that the purpose of a booster is to decrease the amount of pedal "pressure" needed to stop and you have a more sensitive pedal feel..

What you are experiencing is normal brake action.. Just drive carefully as you get used to the more sensitive pedal feel....
