Any transmission experts?

I've been working on the Th350 in my newly acquired $400 Cheyenne trying to work some bugs out.

First off, I know this trans is not long for this world. It's lazy going into gear, and it's not the orginal- the truck is coded for an M40 TH400.

I pulled the pan to fix the extreme slop in the shifter after I determined that it was internal to the trans. The nut securing the manual lever together had backed off-quick fix.

However, upon inspection of the pan I found something that is very likely related to and the cause of my quirky 2-3 shifts. When the trans is cold its shifts fine. After it warms however, it refuses to shift from 2nd to 3rd, unless you shift the lever to 2 and then back to D..then it shifts right away.

What I found in the pan was several fragments of what looked to be a thin snap ring or something related. Looking along it's surface you can see machined diagonal grooves..I'm not familiar with transmission parts so i don't know what it is.Any ideas?

Thanks!

I'm not expert on these things for sure. But, it sounds to me like this may be some of the clutch pack or something. I think you should maybe start the search for another one to swap it with.

sounds like clutch lining like swervin said. From the way you describe it i'd say it's the direct clucth, have you had any problems with reverse?? When you manually shift a th350, it will use a band clutch to obtain 2nd. Also check the vacuum line and modulator. The delayed engagement and other problems are likely caused by a tired pump, clogged filter, or an internal leak somewhere. The clutch material in the pan is a sign that it will soon be leaving you stranded as you alreay know, so look for another or rebuild it.

No, reverse works ok... there's just a 2 second delay between going to R or D, and the trans engaging. Every now and then it drops from 3 to 2, on it's own, at steady light throttle.Weird, huh?

The engine is tired so I really don't want to experiment with forced downshifts or anything :p

Thanks...

I would then suspect the shifting problem to be related to the modulator or valvebody since you can get it to go into 3rd by manually putting it into 2nd and them up to D, and that it sometimes just does things on it's own. The clutch material in the pan is bad no matter how you look at it, but the shifting problem is probibly not caused by it directly. Many seals could be leaking but I would bet some passage is plugged with crud.

It sounds like it is suffering from clutch wear and from what you say about dropping out of direct it is a good bet your pump is about gone.
