Recommendation on Carburetor Selection
67 Chevy C20 Longhorn with 402 big block. Finally got it running after replacing fuel pump, plugs, distro cables & cap etc. Has a Carter AFB 9605S that has a leaking accelerator pump and the air fuel screws don't seam to work (no change in RPM when I attempt to adjust the air fuel mixture - as a novice).
Trying to decide: Rebuild the Carter AFB Buy a reconditioned OEM Stage 2 Quadrajet $469 Buy a reconditioned Edelbrock 600 CFM carb $499 http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/CB/full.aspx?page=58 Although I'm not made of $$, I value reliability highly. Thoughts? Fortgot to mention, I have the original 2 quadrajet carb but it was left outside and it looks pretty rough.

Not to many parts, why not rebuild it? Summit has a rebuild kit for $45, for that its worth a try. While you've got it apart give it a good cleaning. If you rebuild it, put a straight edge on the top and base plate to make sure it isn't warped. If you decide to buy one I would get the edelbrock, its basically an improved design of the carter.

I don't know what "Stage 2" means in a Q-Jet. I would talk to one of the experts in Q-Jet repair who can make you one that is calibrated for your engine. I'd recommend a Q-Jet because that's what was on your truck when new.
As far as the Carter is concerned, it's flooding or the float(s) are set too high is why fuel is coming out the accelerator piston hole. As a result, idle mixture screw adjustment will be useless.

He likely means the quadrajet smi has. A much better deal than an eddy. The quadrajet doesn’t need the required fuel pressure regulator or heat spacer the eddy carb does.

My new eddy 600 cfm was $335 from summit last year, love it so far. With a HEi and tune up you'll be good.
And don't buy from LMCrap

Edelbrock's tuning book and tech service is better than Carter's, which is non-existant now. Shop Jeg's and Summit for bigger ticket items. I have been running my AFB for nearly 20 years now. Cost $199 at the local hot rod parts shop retail, then.

I bought the summit M2008 600cfm.i haven't had a chance to run it but it has great reviews on several forums and on the summit page. It only ran me $289

Based on everyone's input, I decided to go with a SMI reconditioned Stage 1 Quadrajet. Although I plan on rebuilding the engine at some point, I don't plan on doing anything special with it. I just want it to perform as originally designed.
Appreciate everyone's input!
