Recommendation on Carburetor Selection

67 Chevy C20 Longhorn with 402 big block. Finally got it running after replacing fuel pump, plugs, distro cables & cap etc. Has a Carter AFB 9605S that has a leaking accelerator pump and the air fuel screws don't seam to work (no change in RPM when I attempt to adjust the air fuel mixture - as a novice).

Trying to decide:
Rebuild the Carter AFB
Buy a reconditioned OEM Stage 2 Quadrajet $469
Buy a reconditioned Edelbrock 600 CFM carb $499

Although I'm not made of $$, I value reliability highly.

Fortgot to mention, I have the original 2 quadrajet carb but it was left outside and it looks pretty rough.

Not to many parts, why not rebuild it? Summit has a rebuild kit for $45, for that its worth a try. While you've got it apart give it a good cleaning. If you rebuild it, put a straight edge on the top and base plate to make sure it isn't warped. If you decide to buy one I would get the edelbrock, its basically an improved design of the carter.

I don't know what "Stage 2" means in a Q-Jet. I would talk to one of the experts in Q-Jet repair who can make you one that is calibrated for your engine. I'd recommend a Q-Jet because that's what was on your truck when new.

As far as the Carter is concerned, it's flooding or the float(s) are set too high is why fuel is coming out the accelerator piston hole. As a result, idle mixture screw adjustment will be useless.

Although I'm not made of $$, I value reliability highly. I purchased a new one a few years back for less than 250. It is any easily adjustable, bolt on and forget it carb. I have not had issue one in over 10 years running ethanol.

Thoughts?

Reconditioned Edelbrock 600 cfm for 5 Benjamins ???????

I would shy way away from that one! I purchased a new one 10 years ago for around 250 bills. Easily adjustable, going strong, on everyday 87 pump gas.

He likely means the quadrajet smi has. A much better deal than an eddy. The quadrajet doesn’t need the required fuel pressure regulator or heat spacer the eddy carb does.

I would highly recommend SMI give Sean a call and talk to him about your situation and Im sure he will be able to meet your needs. I sent him an E-bay rebuild I purchased from a board member he called me back with his recommendations so I went with his advise , go the carb back bolted it on all I had to do was adjust the idle very happy with the results. For what its worth you cannot bead a properly set up Qjet best damn carb ever made but hell Im biased. Not to mention its what should be on there.

My new eddy 600 cfm was $335 from summit last year, love it so far. With a HEi and tune up you'll be good.
And don't buy from LMCrap

Rebuild the Carter AFB. I have a 9605S [600 CFM] and I run it on a 350 V8 in a '71 GMC Jimmy. Works great, easy to work on. You want an Edelbrock recarb kit #1470 or 1477. [One is the whole kit, the other is an accelerator pump piece which is also included in the big kit]. Call Edelbrock and tell them you have a 1405 or 1406. [ '05 is manual Choke]. They are very knowledgable and friendly -- just don't tell them you have an original Carter AFB. The tech rep will clam up if you let on it's a Carter. Just play along. Ask for a 'Performer Carb' Owner's tuning manual. They're free. Federal Mogul bought out Carter, and sold AFB carbs until the early 2000s. Edelbrock, which had also been marketing the same carb [from the same Weber plant] then, sometime in the current Century, got the exclusive rights to sell that design patent. Big Corporations -- go figure -- whatever.

I think the only "improvement" Edelbrock put on the AFB design was a big red decal. Otherwise it's unchanged -- which is a good thing. Edelbrock's tuning book and tech service is better than Carter's, which is non-existant now.
Shop Jeg's and Summit for bigger ticket items. I have been running my AFB for nearly 20 years now. Cost $199 at the local hot rod parts shop retail, then.

I bought the summit M2008 600cfm.i haven't had a chance to run it but it has great reviews on several forums and on the summit page. It only ran me $289

Those carbs look like they are finely dialed pieces.

Based on everyone's input, I decided to go with a SMI reconditioned Stage 1 Quadrajet. Although I plan on rebuilding the engine at some point, I don't plan on doing anything special with it. I just want it to perform as originally designed.
